A no holds barred look at life in an institution...definetely a classic!

Outstanding! I have NEVER been one to stick with a novel-type of book that did not captivate my interest. This is a superb piece of literature in its complexity of the mental health industry and a miscreant who tries to fake a mental illness to get out of work detail and once he becomes institutionalized he stops at nothing to shake up the rigid system of "Nurse Ratched." The individual characters are handled with a certain amount of poise as each of them are human beings first and foremost. One reason this book was of interest to me is because I have an older sibling who lived in an institution long-term before many of them started closing down. The people you meet there are like the characters in this book, unflinchingly real in their humanity. Yes, this book is fairly old and came out way back before the Reagan years and mental institutions started closing. If you have not already I would highly recommend the film version starring Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched. It's sad and thought-provoking at times just like the novel. A highly emotional piece of literature told from the point of view of "the Chief" told with great depth, detail, and poignancy. Still an excellent read after forty-some years of publication. If you are interested in or work in the mental health profession you do not want to miss this literary classic.
