Also available in paperback (full-color ISBN 978-1478169383, black and white ISBN 978-1478169727).

This eBook provides a highly visual and colorful introduction to a variety of basic astronomy concepts:

  • Overview of the Solar System
  • Understanding the Lunar Phases
  • Understanding Solar and Lunar Eclipses
  • Understanding the Seasons
  • Evidence that the Earth is Round
  • Models of Our Solar System
  • Laws of Motion in Astronomy
  • Beyond Our Solar System
  • This eBook features numerous NASA space photos. (NASA did not participate in the writing or publication of this eBook.) Many diagrams, like the heliocentric and geocentric models or explaining the phases of the moon, were constructed by combining together NASA space photos instead of simply drawing circles.

The content is suitable for a general interest audience, as well as those who may be learning astronomy and are looking for some supplemental instruction that is highly visual and focused on a variety of fundamental concepts.

There are about 17,000 words in this eBook and over 100 color images. (The paperback edition of this eBook has 186 pages.)

Tips: A few of the photos can look much larger if you simply rotate your eReader 90 degrees, switching between portrait and landscape mode. (Some popular eReaders also allow you to zoom in on an individual picture, though the zoom option is not always easy to find.) Remember that you can change the font size on your eReader to make the text larger or smaller (but, unfortunately, this may not affect the size of the equations, but, fortunately, there are only a few equations in this eBook).

I spent several days going over this wonderful book and for someone who is not overly familiar with the terms and for processes of cosmology, it is written so that almost anyone can understand what the author is trying to convey. The charts, graphs, and hand drawn illustrations are second to none. The photos that are from several different sources, are absolutely stunning! Too Dry a Book, Where's the Passion, Sense of Wonder?
    By Book Shark
An Introduction to Basic Astronomy Concepts by Chris McMullen, Ph.D.

" An Introduction to Basic Astronomy Concepts" is a concise book about basic information about astronomy accessible to a very general audience. It provides many diagrams and photos that helps explain basic astronomical concepts. This is as basic as it gets. It succeeds at reaching out to the scientifically-challenged masses but is too basic for anyone who has a basic understanding of science. This brief 193-page eBook is composed of the following eight chapters: 1. Overview of the Solar System, 2. Understanding the Lunar Phases, 3. Understanding Solar and Lunar Eclipses, 4. Understanding the Seasons, 5. Evidence that the Earth is Round, 6. Models of our Solar System, 7. Laws of Motion in Astronomy and Beyond Our Solar System.

    Positives:
    1. It succeeds at providing a very basic understanding of astronomy.
    2. As accessible a book as they come. The author keeps it brief and concise.
    3. Good and effective use of diagrams and illustrations.
    4. Very limited use of equations thus those mathematically-challenged can concentrate on the concepts.
    5. Provides the pronunciation of key words, very helpful.
    6. A good albeit basic overview of astronomical concepts.
    7. The basics of our solar system. Lunar phases and eclipses with many visual cues. Why Pluto was kicked off.
    8. Basic concepts of physics explained as it pertains to astronomy.
    9. Does a good job of taking the reader by the hand while offering succinct explanations.
    10. A heliocentric solar system not a geocentric one.
    11. What causes the phases of the moon.
    12. A good quick refresher. Kepler's Laws, Newton's Laws...
    13. Types of stars according to mass.
    14. Type of galaxies.
    15. Ends with a good summary.

    Negatives:
    1. Too basic. Book is really intended for the scientifically-challenged masses.
    2. The author does not write with panache. The book lacks passion, the sense of awe for science.
    3. Does explain why the Earth is round, I don't think there are many flat-earthers around (though believe it or not they do exist).
    4. Because of the visuals, this book is best read on the Kindle Fire, you will lose the visual impact on the regular Kindles.
    5. No notes, references, bibliography or even web links to speak of.
    6. A glossary of terms never hurts.

In summary, too basic a book for yours truly to enjoy but may serve your purpose if you are scientifically-challenged. I was looking for a book to go over the basics of astronomy ala Dummy Series and I found this available for free under the excellent Prime program for Amazon and decided to give it a read. That being said, I do appreciate Dr. McMullen's intent to reach out to the public. Scientists and science educators do need to reach out and spread scientific knowledge. Too basic for this reviewer but perhaps you know someone who can use a little help.

Recommendations: "Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier" by Neil deGrasse Tyson, " About Time: Cosmology and Culture at the Twilight of the Big Bang" by Adam Frank, "Death from the Skies!: These Are the Ways the World Will End . . ." by Philip Plait, "Wonders of the Universe" by Brian Cox, and "Cosmos" Carl Sagan. If you are looking for a great table top book on the solar system, "Solar System: A Visual Exploration of All the Planets, Moons and Other Heavenly Bodies that Orbit Our Sun" written by Marcus Chown is a visual treat.

Robert Polidori: Havana, by Eduardo Luis Rodriguez

Robert Polidori, often considered an architectural photographer, is in fact a photographer of habitat. On the surface his subjects are buildings, but at the core his lens is focused on the remnants and traces of living he finds scattered in hallways, left in back rooms and worn on facades. His spectacular color photographs are presented here in an appropriately oversized volume that capture both their monumentality and their attention to detail. Havana is a particularly rich setting for Polidori's inquiries. The curves and columns that line the streets refer to past eras and speak of the political, social and economic forces that have driven the city to its present condition. Through his rigorous and sensitive examination--facilitated by a sense of color and composition that makes his photographs feel like vivid memories--Polidori delicately peels away the patina of daily living and reveals the juxtapositions that create a city's identity. His photographs define the idea of faded grandeur. In this city the peddler lives where the countess once resided; children dance and tumble where merchants conducted their business. Each photograph is a discovery and a fragment of the city's biography.

    Amazon.com Review
Robert Polidori's Havana is a haunting city of sherbet colors and peeling stucco, grand colonial architecture in decay, and real people who hang their laundry across a lofty foyer in an old mansion. Polidori's photographs, which fill the pages of this beautiful, oversized book, appear without comment, yet it is impossible to miss the affection and melancholy of his highly personal vision.

    Beautiful..
    By Spank'd McThomas
There's a phrase that a lot of musical artist use to describe their works when it's dark and emo, 'beautiful mistake', 'beautiful tragedy', 'beautiful decay', etc. I don't 'feel' it all the time, but I 'get' it. It's an artful description.
In this case, the images off of these pages are absolutely beautiful. I don't mean rainbows and sparkly thing, stars and neon lights, or national geographic front cover. I mean beautiful like looking at another person's eyes and seeing their culture through their bone structure.
If I lost you, let me try to take you where I'm getting. Have you been to a museum of arts and wondered why is this art and why this artist instead of any other? I think that too. Then I start to get a closer look and ask different questions like why did the artist mix these colors in, why is the brush stroke in that direction? Were these mistakes or luck, or was everything put in it's right place?
That's the questions that I ask when I'm looking at this book. How is everything so perfect? The aging of paint on the walls, the discoloration on the sofa, the mold on the ceiling, all come together in each page and is captured so colorful and easy.
Each page is something that you'd want to hang on your wall and show yourself everyday an example of how mother nature paints over the things that man makes. And it all takes place in culturally embraced setting called Havana which makes it even more wonderful.

    Havana Daydreaming
    By G. Ware Cornell Jr.
There are two principal cities in the world where time seems to stand still. One is Pripyat' Ukraine which was abandoned following the Chernobyl disaster in April, 198. In that unfortunate time literally all the people left within 24 hours. The other is Havana whose middle and upper classes departed over several decades following the Cuban Revolution mainly to live in the United States.

Unlike Pripyat' where vegetation and wildlife replaced human inhabitants, the City of Havana lives on despite its painful decay.

Robert Polidori's Havana depicts several days in the life of the city in the early years of the new century. Probably by chance, the period he photographed represented simultaneously the zenith and nadir of the Revolution. His camera details the architectural heritage of the colonial era set among the blockish facades of Socialist reality. Even as neglect defaces these urban jewels, a certain spirit shines through recalling a city whose exiles in Florida still yearn to return.

As we enter the last days of the Cuban experiment in our hemisphere, the Havana so lovingly pictured here will not endure. Buildings and homes will be restored naturally enough. But the spirit of the urban caretakers of this legacy might have been lost forever if not for Polidori's lens. This is an amazing and dreamy work that belongs to a city and people whose heritage stayed behind.

    beautiful colors
    By Amazon Customer
Knowing that I will never be able to travel to Havana I wanted to get some idea of the city. I especially appreciated the facing pages that showed the building in disrepair and then after having been restored.

The colors used in both interiors and exteriors are generally beautiful. The photos many times seem more like paintings.

The book has exterior shots, interior shots and portraits of residents of the city. I would have appreciated more context. Did the lady of the house always live there? Were all those books hers? Or were they left by a previous occupant?

How was it possible for some residents to maintain their homes so beautifully in spite of the Cuban economic difficulties?

I especially noticed that the tradional architecture was so much more graceful and beautiful than the huge hotel overshadowing everything. Is that the future of Havana? More huge tourist hotels looming above the old city and the people?

Actually, the whole sad story of the decay of beauty reminded me of Detroit.

Lester Levenson's Secret Comeback - Will I am: Walking in - a new Way to live, by Dr. Karin A. Wettig

"Masters really help when you ask them and Angels work only upon request!" was Dr. Karin Wettig's revelation after having written complaint letters for years to a famous Indian master who never answered. In this book she reports some of her experiences from her personal spiritual journal to share them with the reader.
During two near death accidents, unexpected support surprisingly came from another plane. Being rescued twice made her investigate the realm of human consciousness deeper. After having studied various mental and energetic healing techniques such as NLP, Hypnosis, Matrix, Healing Touch, Releasing, Rebirthing and even physical therapies, she discovered that stilling the mind by meditation using pure awareness was the bridge to meeting the masters "in a body" or even on the astral plane. Born in the same year when Lester Levenson, an American Physicist, went from deadly illness to full healing by awakening to enlightenment within three months, Karin Wettig never believed in any religious or spiritual tradition. Driven by allergies, severe nutrition problems and pain, she was convinced that God existed neither in churches nor in the universe. Angry with her destiny, she set out to discover the truth behind all suffering. Lester Levenson's self-realization intrigued her. As she couldn't ask him in person, her research of several years led her intuition to unveil exciting coincidences that proved to her the magically inspiring power of spiritual masters and the hidden presence of Lester Levenson in a new form because nothing is impossible to a true master.

....The moment Lester Levenson took a break to prepare his second coming between 1994 and 1996 was just the right time to be back when the spiritual sprout which was sewn by Lester and other masters would be ready to grow into the next level. When we trace back Lester's journey after enlightenment in 1952, he started teaching in the early 1960s and slowly groups of spiritually interested persons came together to listen to his talks, first in New York, later in Arizona and California and elsewhere. But there are many coincidences to his activities which I never found described in other books.....p. 74

    From the Inside Flap
    THANK YOU

This book is dedicated to all my beloved masters. They inspired me on my path to discover the Truth about the SELF, Life and myself although I am still not at the end of my path of discovery. In this book, I wish to share some insights which fell from heaven into my awareness. It is possible that some aspects might be true for you too or perhaps seem unlikely to you. The experiences are part of my personal spiritual journal and I dare to share them here with the reader. These insights gave me a deeper understanding of body, consciousness, birth and death and it became much clearer how everything is connected to the Soul. Living in a body on a Planet expresses the soul's desire to bring divine love, truth, magnificence and beauty to this earth plane. Nevertheless everybody is free to believe what he feels is believable. It is not my intention to change the readers' convictions or insights. I only wish to share some intuitive insights that my relationship to Lester Levenson gave me. Just enjoy reading!....p. 3

Author and Book Information for the Title "Lester Levenson's Secret Comeback - Will I am by Dr. Karin Wettig, Munich, Germany

Some of the exciting insights are shared her from her personal spiritual journal.

"Masters really help when you ask them and Angels work only upon request!" was her revelation after having written complaint letters for years to a famous Indian master who never answered.

Mr Linville is a spiritual teacher whose videos you canwatch on YouTube
    By chris pearson
A long-time student of Lester Levenson and also of Yogananda and SRF I was intrigued enough to buy by this book.

The word 'book' is a bit generous, given the short length of the text. And, I have to say, it is badly written: garbled in grammar and repetitious.

The central thesis is that Lester reincarnated - or rather, 're-embodied' - in a terminally ill and suicidal man named William Linville. Mr Linville is a spiritual teacher whose videos you can watch on YouTube. As is Lester himself, so you can compare the two.

Lester was, I believe 'the real deal': that rare individual who achieved realization on his own. His teaching was simple: never using two syllables if one would do. He also respected, even revered Yogananda as another realized being - or just a 'free one' in Lester plainspeak.

Lester taught time and time again that to be unenlightened and in a body on Planet Earth is about as tough as sexistence gets. It's so bad at least it gives us the incentive to go 'all the way' back home. He called the body 'the carcasse'. Once we become free we 'go out no more'.

Hence the idea Lester would immediately choose to be reborn or re-embodied is not credible. As is the idea he would mislead his students about this, by saying in his last letter that he was leaving his body and focussing his consciousness in 'a better place'.

Ms. Wettig also seems to dismiss Yogananda and his teachings as little more than exercises in 'stopping the breath.' The greatest spiritual teachings ever given to the planet by realized Masters: a spiritual science proved over thousands of years. All I would ask is: 'Has this lady ever studied them?'

If William Linville is a re-embodied Lester, why not just ask him? If he is, he will surely tell the truth. The notion that a realized master might not because of 'copyright issues' relating to his creation of the Sedona Method, is pure bathos.

In one of his videos on YouTube Lester says 'someone once said unrealized life as like the Oleander, fragrant but poisonous.' Lester doesn't say so, but that person was Yogananda.

    Silly.

I should have known better than to purchase this. Tons of typos, grammatical and sentence structure mistakes, to the point that I kept having to read a sentence repeatedly to try to figure out what was being said. And it jumped all over the place. Shame on people who would put stuff out there like this, like a first draft of a fourth grader's book report. After having drunk a few beers. (And if English isn't your first language, then for gosh sake's have an English speaking person edit it!!) Shame on me for being such a sucker.

A good basic introduction to the life of Lester Levenson and his work
    By Susan Dolamore
The life story of Lester Levenson and the phenomenon of his reincarnation as William Linville is very intriguing. Dr. Karin Wettig gives a good introduction. I had never heard of him, though I had heard mention of the method of subconscious mind reprogramming that he anchored into form in the creation of the Sedona Method, however I knew nothing about it. This book is thought provoking and a satisfying quick read. There is value is what is shared about how enlightenment is attained and what practical actions may contribute to the process. After reading it, I was inspired to do more research on the Sedona Method and will continue to experience and explore further.

It was my first book using a digital e-reader which most certainly affected my enjoyment of the book. I would prefer a paper copy as I feel that paper interfaces with my brain in a different way that allows the information to be integrated more easily. Perhaps in time, I will adapt to this new format but for now, I get more from a printed book.

Golden Ass of Apuleius, by Marie-Louise Von Franz

"Today there is much discussion of the liberation of women," writes Marie-Louise von Franz, "but it is sometimes overlooked that this can only succeed if there is a change in men as well. Just as women have to overcome the patriarchal tyrant in their own souls, men have to liberate and differentiate their inner femininity. Only then will a better relationship of the sexes be possible." It is this timely theme that Dr. von Franz explores in her psychological study of a classic work of the second century, The Golden Ass by Apuleius of Madaura. The novel recounts the adventures of a young Roman who is transformed into an ass and eventually finds spiritual renewal through initiation into the Isis mysteries. With its many tales within a tale (including the celebrated story of Psyche and Eros), the text as interpreted by Dr. von Franz is a rich source of insights, anecdotes, and scholarly amplification.

    Illuminating
    By Scribe X.Y.Z.
Anyone who has read thru the standard translations of Apuleius' Golden Ass and wondered whats really going on ought to read
this book. Clearly from a Jungian perspective, Von Franz explains many of the subtle psychological meanings of the many events
that have characterized this book as the "first novel." She charts Lucius' progress through his many adventures and explains
both the actions, and symbolism as it relates to the psychological journey. The highlight for me came at the very end of the book with the explanation of the the grail or jar and its relation to the self and the Cosmic.
    Very illuminating.

    A Jungian approach to Apuleius
    By Daniel Pew
I read this book side-by-side with the Golden Ass of Apuleius. The layout of Von Franz's book lends itself to this approach somewhat. Her book covers enough of the original material however, that I don't think it's necessary to read the original. I rated this five stars because I really enjoyed it, and can't think of a single complaint!

How Life Imitates Chess. by Garry Kasparov with MIG Greengard, by G. K. Kasparov

'In this book, chess is a teacher, and I aim to show it is a great one.' Garry Kasparov Here Grandmaster and World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov shares the powerful secrets of strategy he has learned from dominating the world's most intellectually challenging game - lessons about mastering the strategic and emotional skills to navigate life's toughest challenges and maximise success no matter how tough the competition. 'Unfortunately, the number of ways to do something wrong always exceeds the number of ways to do it right.' Drawing on a wealth of revealing and instructive stories, not only from the most intense and decisive moments of his greatest games, but also from his wide-ranging and perceptive reading, Kasparov reveals the strategic ways of thinking that always give a player - in life as in chess - the edge. We learn about the great figures of the game, and how their contests have shaped chess history; from Capablanca and Alekhine to Bobby Fischer and Kasparov's nemesis, Vladimir Kramnik. 'It's much better to be a little over-confident than the opposite. As Churchill wrote, "Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference." If we trust in our abilities they will repay us.' With a raconteur's engaging charm, Garry Kasparov takes us inside a brilliant strategic mind. As Sun-Tzu distilled the secrets of the art of war and Machiavelli unveiled the lessons to be learned from courtly intrigue, Kasparov - a player whose record is likely never to be rivalled - reveals how and why the game of chess is a fitting and powerful teacher of how to be prepared for, and how to win in, even the most competitive situations. 'I used to attack because it was the only thing I knew. Not I attack because I know it works best.'

    Amazon.com Review
In his 22-year reign as Grandmaster, Garry Kasparov faced more than a few tough choices under the heat of chess competitons. This is a man who knows a thing or two about making smart decisions, and since his retirement in 2005, Kasparov has put his powerful strategic thinking to work in business and politics, showing that a simple reliance on instincts can guide you through even the most complex challenges. With no shortage of wit or eloquence, he's answered our hardest questions about what factors can make or break a decision-making moment. --Anne Bartholomew

    Questions for Garry Kasparov

Amazon.com: Why do you think decisiveness is such an elusive skill for people to master? Are there simply too many choices? What’s a good first step for negotiating your options?

Kasparov: It’s true that today we are faced with greater complexity in almost every aspect of our lives, from global competition in the business world to more options for entertainment. The connected world has flooded us with a limitless supply of data, and equally limitless choices. One of the problems this has created is that it creates the illusion, or delusion, that we can achieve perfection in our decisions by accumulating more information. It’s too easy to blame faulty decisions on imperfect information, but information is always limited in some way, as is the time available to make our decisions. Forget perfection! Decisiveness comes from the courage to trust your instincts. The more you trust, the more you’ll build up that intuition and the more accurate it will become, creating a positive cycle.

Before you lay out your options, what we might call considering your next move, you have to have a solid understanding of the present. Evaluation is more important than calculation. Rushing into narrowing things down to a list of options is itself a form of making a choice -- and if you do that, you can prematurely rule out important possibilities. Stop looking ahead for a moment and examine the current state of affairs. Good decisions come from a solid understanding of all the factors that come into play. Once you have tuned your evaluation skills and learned to put the options on hold for a moment you’ll often find that difficult decisions become obvious.

Amazon.com: Taking a holistic view of your career, do you recall the moment you identified your talent for thinking strategically? Is it possible for you to separate that sense of yourself from your identity as a chess champion?

Kasparov: In the world of competitive chess, or any sport for that matter, everything is relative. Your results tell you about your talent. How can you identify a talent that goes untested? That’s one reason I’m so passionate about trying new things and about encouraging others to leave their comfort zones. I was fortunate in that my status as world champion brought me into contact with world leaders, top executives, authors, and other luminaries. I very much enjoyed these exchanges, learning about these other worlds. It also gave me the chance to share my own thoughts, something I’ve never been shy about doing. I’m sure they had to humor my impetuousness on occasion! But often they encouraged me and I discovered I had a knack for making unusual connections, a way of seeing the big picture that wasn’t limited to the chessboard.

Until my retirement from chess in March 2005 it would have been nearly impossible for me to separate myself from my chess identity--other than love for family and friends. But since then I have moved into several entirely different worlds. I’m at the table as a politician, or writing editorials, or lecturing about strategy and intuition in front of business audiences. My former chess career still precedes me in these settings, but they aren’t humoring me anymore! Actually, the biggest step was working on this book, which forced me to consider the mechanics of my own mind beyond chess. I had to ask myself if I really had something to offer and then figure out how to express it concretely. The positive reactions of my lecture audiences also helped in this regard.

Amazon.com: Playing chess competitively no doubt requires huge reserves of passion, patience, and discipline. For those readers who haven’t experienced the kind of rigorous training that competitive chess imparts, can you recommend some good ways to practice strategic thinking?

Kasparov: We all do it every day, the difference is that it takes discipline to become aware of it. In the book I ask the reader to consider all the significant decisions they made that day, that week. You don’t have to be a chess player or an executive to benefit from improving your decision- making process. We make hundreds of decisions just to get through each day. A handful are important enough to keep track of, to look back on critically. Were they successful? Why or why not? We can train ourselves, which is really the only way.

Amazon.com: Did you ever find during a particularly difficult match that it was hard to prevent your emotions from clouding your decision-making ability? What was your strategy for coping with stress or anxiety in that kind of situation?

Kasparov: Emotion is a critical element of decision-making, not a sin always to be avoided. As with anything it is harmful in excess. You learn to focus it and control it the best you can. I’m a very emotional person in and out of chess so this was always a challenge for me. When I sat down at the board against my great rival, Anatoly Karpov, it was a special occasion. I knew it, he knew it, and we both knew the chess world was paying special attention. We had such a long and bitter history that it was impossible not to bring it to the board with us every time we played.

On some occasions this anxiety created negative emotions like doubt. More often it generated greater creative tension, greater supplies of nervous tension, which is a chess player’s lifeblood.

Usually when you are under stress there is a good reason for it. Learning not to get anxious about things beyond your control is a separate issue. So don’t fight stress, use it! Channel that nervous energy into solving the problems. Sitting around worrying isn’t going to achieve anything and the loss of time will often make the problem worse. Even in the worst case, mistakes of action teach you much more than inaction. Forward!

Amazon.com: If you could choose five people, living or dead, to play you in chess, who would they be?

Kasparov: Don’t you know I have retired as a chess player? Well, I will go with you to the middle with two and a half opponents.

4th world chess champion Alexander Alekhine (d. 1946) was my childhood chess idol. The book of his collected games was my constant companion. He was a player of limitless imagination and combativeness. Some aspects of his pre-WWII-era chess would be considered antique today, but his talent is timeless. Just sitting at the board with him to analyze and share ideas would be like a youthful dream made real.

My next player requires a change of date as well, since I am now retired. In the period of 2001-2002 I felt I deserved a rematch against Vladimir Kramnik, who took my title in 2000. I was still the top-rated player in the world, the obvious top challenger. So I would choose a 16-game match against Kramnik--in 2002.

Last on my list is a chessplayer who is most definitely dead. Even if chess has by now passed it by, I would take a tiebreaker match against Deep Blue. I won our first match; the machine won the second. Then IBM made sure there would be no chance for a rematch. This time everything would be out in the open, no black boxes. Of course chess machines are considerably stronger today. It would still be pleasant to gain revenge and set the record straight.

    From Publishers Weekly
With millions of serious chess players and Kasparov a regular in international news headlines, a business manual by the champion-turned-activist seems a no-brainer. Kasparov discusses each element of chess and strains to find parallels in life and the boardroom. Yet the book is surprisingly serious and readable, even if those who persevere won't necessarily be convinced that chess is an ideal laboratory for the decision-making process. While offering real insight into the game, Kasparov offers somewhat less into general decision making, urging readers to be aware of your routines, then break them and emphasizing both precise calculation and intuition and optimism. The author's attempts at chess metaphor are often a stretch: after all, chess matches are one-on-one and win-lose-draw, resembling war far more closely than anything in the boardroom. In fact, Kasparov's examples more often come from the battlefield than from business. Without a more direct business connection, his advice reverts to platitudes (To achieve success, our strategy must be implemented with accurate tactics). More engaging are the author's autobiographical anecdotes about his face-off against IBM's Deep Blue computer and his 2005 transition to becoming a full-time member of the Russian political opposition movement. Kasparov fans will find much to enjoy, but serious business readers should look elsewhere. (Oct.)

A big fan of Garry am I
    By Keith Halonen
So I read this book even though I am not such a big fan of "the boardroom." Poor Garry has been getting himself arrested lately for being the leader of Russia's opposition party. Did he not see those photos of Putin barechested and packing heat? That could have been interpreted as a clue. I understand he's left the country to live somewhere else in one of the world's 180+ nations that accord (relative) freedom to its citizenry. This book is incisive and though many authors and pundits have drawn analogies between the decisions and actions that characterize great chess play and those that shape history in the real world, I am impelled to insist that the one thing that benefits most – above all others – from keen chess savvy... is chess. An 18-inch board with 64 squares and six different types of interacting "characters" can hardly be compared to the complexities of living life. Granted that many players, like Garry Kasparov and Bobby Fischer and Ludek Pachman (just to name a very few) become politically involved in a dramatic way. Chess, as its conducted at the world-class level, is intensely characterized by political intrigues, and many great players are paid to endorse chess products (computers, sets, books) just like athletes in the more physical sports, and – yes – chess has been the artificial intelligence benchmark for computer programmers for decades. But it certainly doesn't stand alone as a template for understanding and coping with life. Greatly admire the author. Humbled by his chess prowess. The book was OK. Well worth the read.

The Mindset Behind one of the World's Most Brilliant Strategists
    By TW
Accessing the minds of those who are considered genius is an intriguing concept, but most often I have discovered such books to be a letdown as most are unable to convey their brilliance. Garry Kasparov, considered by many to be the best chess player of all time, has that perception of genius. I was pleased to discover that his mater-of-fact writing style enabled him to surpass this common hurdle and elegantly express the complexities of his deep thinking, strategies, and general principles of success.

Although one of the most impressive tactical players in history, Kasparov communicates the critical importance on strategy outlined in a quote by Sun Tzu, "Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat." The separation between analyzing problems and assessing the actual existence of problems is given extra importance, as Kasparov makes it clear that long term vision trumps short term tactics. "If you play without long-term goals your decisions will become purely reactive and you'll be playing your opponents game, not your own. As you jump from one thing to the next, you will be pulled off course, caught up in what's right in front of you and instead of what you need to achieve."

In chess there is an immense amount of strategy, focus, and diligent study that is behind the game, and these principles are true in life as well. Strategy is only a single element covered in this book, as Kasparov relates all his principles with numerous chess examples, metaphors, and real world applications. How Life Imitates Chess is filled with considerable insight and profound concepts, and considering the source, the lessons are invaluable.

defeats Waitzkin's "Art Of Learning," narrowly
    By Patrick Moore LMT Educator
Both "How Life Imitates Chess" and "Art of Learning" are written by men of similar experience about similar topics. Both winners in chess took their experiences to become winners in other arenas. Both now speak and coach corporations and businesses in success strategies.

While Waitzkin's book is more exciting because of the blow-by-blow writing style, and exciting battles in martial arts, I think Kasparov's book has more lasting value because of this one difference: Waitzkin recommends success by finding what you are good at, and putting yourself in more positions where your strengths will shine. Kasparov recommends success by taking honest inventory of what you are not good at, and putting the most effort into your weaknesses for better overall balance. I believe our world needs more of the second approach as I will point out below.

Both books completely ignore the idea of cooperation. In every example, these two experts tell us how to vanquish the enemy. I personally have no enemies. My business does not depend on competition. I win when others win. This idea is not even hinted at in either book. One might jump to the conclusion that chess helps people who are competitive, but leaves a hole where your cooperative skills would be.

Both authors could learn from Benjamin Franklin who played chess frequently. Franklin was a genius in many arenas, many we are still learning as pointed out in "Benjamin Franklin's Numbers" by math teacher Paul Pasles. We may assume that Franklin might have been the world champion at chess if he had felt the urge to competition. But even during the war, he did not view England as an adversary, nor the States as a winner at someone's expense, but often said that American independence would be good for the whole world, England included. Our earth is too small, now, to continue thinking competitively. In Franklin's own words,

"moderate your desire of victory over your adversary, and be pleased with one over yourself. Snatch not eagerly at every advantage offered by his unskilfulness or inattention; but point out to him kindly, that by such a move he places or leaves a piece in danger and unsupported; that by another he will put his king in a perilous situation, etc. By this generous civility ... you may, indeed, happen to lose the game to your opponent; but you will win what is better, his esteem, his respect, and his affection, together with the silent approbation and goodwill of impartial spectators."

    A Must Read
    By SG
I've come to learn that my story is not much different from that of other IBD sufferers. I was living a happy and healthy life, when one day, for no apparent reason, I suddenly began to experience abdominal cramps and loose stools. Over time, this progressed to debilitating abdominal pain and 20+ bloody and mucoid bowel movements each day. As I am training to be a medical doctor myself, I naturally turned to traditional medicine for answers. Definitive answers, though, were far from what I got. Nonetheless, traditional medicine was all I knew. So despite its obvious gaps in knowledge on this matter, I took a leap of faith and followed the directions given to me. I tried just about every anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, and over-the-counter analgesic available. I went through numerous courses of steroids and even an immunosuppressant. For about a year, I let the doctors adjust and readjust medication dosages in the hopes that they would eventually find the key and would be able to protect me from having a colectomy. During this year, life as I knew it, was over. I had to take leave from school, lost about 60 pounds, spent 10 days in the hospital, experienced indescribable abdominal pain, became house-bound due to the frequency of bowel movements, took around 20+ pills daily, incurred numerous side effects to these various medications, and spent thousands of dollars on treatments that did not help.

My own observations led me to believe that the treatments I was being given were actually worsening my condition. But what could I do? After all, I had to follow the advice of my experienced doctors, right? Wrong. One day, I finally realized that if all these medications weren't helping, then how could I justify the side effects and expense. I understood what the doctors were saying when they strongly advised me not to stop my treatment, but I also realized that no study that they quoted could ever hold a candle to my own experiences. I was slowly and painfully dying at the age of 27, and nothing that they were doing for me was of any help at all. Traditional medicine has done wondrous things for many people, including myself, over the years, but in the case of IBD, it did not have answer for me and I needed to look elsewhere.

Everything changed for me when I MIRACULOUSLY found Dave's book online. I don't doubt that I likely would have dismissed his theories as nonsense if I came across them month 1. But I was now in month 11 and was meeting with a surgeon to discuss having a colectomy. So, I read his book and for the first time felt like someone else understood my predicament. The things he said were in direct agreement with my own experiences and observations. For the first time in a long time, I was filled with hope and felt as if this illness might be manageable. I am now at month 15 and have been free of medications and doctor visits. I've spoken to Dave numerous times over the telephone and through email. He has done nothing less than nurse me back to health. Dave has given me my life back. How do you repay someone for that?

Many of the doctors I work with are quite interested to hear my story. They are astonished that detox and diet have played such a crucial role in my treatment. Such a concept remains foreign to allopathic physicians. A few of these doctors tell me that they have heard similar stories from some of their own patients, but in the end, these doctors have no training or understanding of nutrition and natural healing and can do little more than simply listen to my story.

    THIS BOOK IS A MIRACLE!
    By Laura O. Taylor
I have suffered from colitis and crohns for 7 years. THIS BOOK changed my life in 7 DAYS! I also suffer from celiac, and will not belabor the pain, physical and emotional struggles of having these 3 diseases. I have refused treatment w/ modern prescriptions and went the so-called "natural" route for 5 years. I only became moderately better in beginning, only to experience flareups that became progressively worse. I had spent every dime I had on traditional doctors, natural doctors, vitamins, remedies, to no avail. In desperation I found this book. Having already been vegetarian for 4 yrs and vegan for 8 mos, the transition was not so hard, except for giving up the decaf coffee and salt. As soon as I let go of these things, on day 7, my world turned around! My bowels were normal after 7 years of dysfunction! I replaced my coffee with warm, pure water in the morning. I replaced my grapefruit or gluten free toast with ripe bananas and date smoothies for breakfast and enjoy the lunch and dinner guidelines for the healing phase. I am in DAY 8, after being sick for 2,555 days, not one day without pain and problems, and I am eating without pain, and can feel my body detoxing all the garbage I put in it, hoping to fix my body. Dr. Klein's analysis is brilliant and true. MY BODY HAS BEEN TRYING TO FIX MY BODY all along! I just had to stop interrupting it. I know several people suffering w/ C&C and am urging them to get off the Big Pharm merry-go-round that just keeps them sicker, promotes disease, and makes a lot of people rich in the process. The anti-inflammatories don't work. Eating a diet of meat, scrambled eggs, toast and mashed potatoes certainly won't work. Please, please, please, if you are sick with an inflammatory bowel condition, or just want vital health to be yours, buy this book! It has literally changed my life in a short time. I know because of years of damage from celiac and C&C, I have a way to go and the cravings for the offending foods are tough sometimes, but I know after a few days this is a healthier way to live. Dense, water rich, ripe foods, raw, tasty, nourishing. I never believed I could give up salt, but after a day or two, I actually started tasting the food. Beyond anything else, I, like many C&C sufferers reached the point where I would do anything to get better. I am grateful for this book and carry it with me every day so I can re-read the foods and plan for the healing stage I am in. I can't wait until I am in post-healing! Thank you Dr. Klein for your revolutionary work in this area.

This book gave me a second chance at life
    By Dina Westland
Dr. David Klein is an exceptional human. He has an in depth understanding of Ulcerative Colitis and has the steps to take to cure this disease down to a "t". With his guidance I was able to get my Ulcerative Colitis into remission in just 26 days! The vegan healing diet plan outlined in the book will allow your body to detox and heal itself the way that nature intended. There is no book or doctor that I could recommend more. In addition to purchasing the book I also hired Dr. David Klein as my doctor. Together we were able to modify my diet on an almost daily basis based on the current state of my body. Not only was he able to provide a wealth of knowledge, he was also able to provide me with the emotional support that I needed to get through this difficult time. I am forever grateful to this man for allowing me to live a life not only free of disease, but a life full of health and vitality!

    Perfect
    By Elizabeth Berry
I have yet to get through all the tips and excersizes, but I am getting there. So far the directions are SUPER easy to follow and a lot of fun. The author is quirky and blunt and I like that. Defintely worth the purchase!

    It's not Photoshop Elements 7
    By Robert Sobotik
Don't make the mistake I did when I saw Photoshop 7 and thought it was Photoshop Elements 7. Although an excellent book, it is over 7 years old and most techniques can't be followed in Photoshop Elements 7.

Extremely useful for learning cool stuff in a fun way.
    By Chris
There are two kinds of Photoshop books I buy, large expensive reference books (usually one per version I upgrade to) and specific technique books. The reference tombs I refer to when I’m trying to get something done and can’t figure out how to do it. They aren’t fun, but do provide needed guidance. Then there are the books (like this one) that are fun to sit down with and learn as I actually work on images. By the time I had done about a quarter of the techniques in the book I found that my Photoshop skills had really grown in areas that I’ve always found confusing before. And in several cases I found better ways to do stuff that I thought I already knew a lot about.
I usually don’t have much use for the CD’s that come with books, but this one has the before and after example pictures for each of the techniques, and I found it really helpful to open the actual files that the examples use and work through the steps, seeing the changes as the image is transformed. On the other hand, why anyone would want to use the trial version of Photoshop included on the CD, I can’t imagine. But the whole book is on the CD as an e-book, and that makes it possible to do some cool searches.
Overall I’m really impressed with what I was able to get out of this book, and with the enjoyable way it’s all presented. Lots of creative techniques, good background details about what the controls in dialog boxes do, and a painless workout of Photoshop’s more complex and powerful functions. Definitely a cool way to learn about Photoshop 7.
