Confessions of an Old Geek, by John Lockridge

John Lockridge worked as a computer Field Engineer starting in the early days of mainframe computers. For fifty, years starting in 1962, John has been a computer geek.

Here he tells his story, laced with hilarious anecdotes of what it was like to "fix broken computers and customers" through stints with NCR, GE, Honeywell, Digital Equipment Corporation and with time out in the middle to run a backpacking outfitter retail store and various other adventures.

The author's sense of humor and love of storytelling should make this a fun read for geeks and non-geeks alike. When the story tilts to the technical side, John issues "GEEKSPEAK WARNINGS" so that the non-geek can skip ahead for the next funny tale involving customers, co-workers, or family members.

Computer history buffs often find their reading material somewhat dry. While this book could accurately be described as computer history, it is anything but dry.

The author admits that some of the stories here may have been colored a bit by TEM (time enhanced memory). He makes no apology for that. This work is intended to entertain, and while the accuracy of the various accounts is presented as remembered, John makes no warranty as to perfection.

A paper bag of oyster offal under the raised floor at the IBM (competitor) end of the computer room. Smoke drifting from a power supply killed by an errant screwdriver. Emergency repairs made to a Defense Intelligence Agency computer using big red rubber bands during the Vietnam War. Tape drive repair parts purchased from Dairyman Specialty, a dairy milker maintenance company, A favorite necktie fed into a check sorter. You get the idea.

John's "first computer" had vacuum tubes in some of the peripherals, though the processor and memory were all solid state. Maximum 48 k memory. System cost? Over $7,000,000 in 2012 dollars.

Come on in. Put your feet up. Tread this nostalgic path through the years with this Old Geek.

A very enjoyable trip down memory lane!
By Michael L Bowman
Disclaimer up front - the author is my uncle, and I have many memories of his tales that are recounted in this book. I have been skimming through it and will begin reading it in earnest today, but knowing Uncle John's talent for a finely crafted story, buyers and readers will not be disappointed!

I can offer a bit of the story myself. When he worked at NASA's Wallops Island facility, our family went over to visit for a weekend. This was in the mid-1960s, and being a youngster I was fascinated with NASA, spaceflight, and counting down with Launch Control as we watched Gemini lift-offs on the massive TVs set that the teacher would roll into the classroom. 60+ kids packed into the room . . . "3-2-1-0-LIFTOFF!" and massive cheering. Anyway, on our visit to Wattsville, Uncle John took us on a tour of the Wallops control center where he worked. He demonstrated that the mainframe could play musical tones, and that if one knew how (he did), the computer could even play a simple tune. The A/C was working very well, seems it was about 50-55 degrees in the computer room. At the time, NASA had a backup Mercury capsule in one of the hangers. I was able to climb in a play spaceman for a while. Now *that* was awesome!

There was also the tutoring in binary, octal, and how to read punch cards, and the late night trip to National Airport (now Reagan) to pick up computer parts for an absolutely-must-be-fixed-by-morning job at the Pentagon.

Oh yeah, I got to play in the Volkswagen when it was stored at our house. Too bad you can't buy that smell in a can.

Uncle John, thanks for the memories, and the tunes. Mike

Loved it!
By Aaron Shilling
This was very well written and I loved the little bits of humor. I must admit that I am a bit of a geek as well. I actually understood the joke "There are only 10 kinds of people: Those who speak binary and those who don't." I must confess John is my second cousin but I read a lot of things in this book that I did not know about him. Keep up the great work! Great results are just a tweak away!

Customer Appreciation
By Randal
I must confess up front that I was one of the individuals that had to call John when I worked at DuPont. I certainly enjoyed reflecting back on the PDP 11 days and the challenges as well as the 1 or 2 AM phone calls. Enjoyed the reading very much and the memories that were stirred up. Thanks for the wonderful trip back in time.
