Last Dance at the Savoy: Life, Love and Caring for Someone With Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, by Kathryn Leigh Scott

When Kathryn Leigh Scott's husband was diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a neurological disease for which there is (so far) no cure, it was a devastating time for both of them, not least because so little is known about the cause or treatment of a disease that affects some 20,000 Americans, a number similar to that of Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS).

Last Dance at the Savoy is both a personal story about Scott's husband, Geoff Miller, the founding editor of Los Angeles magazine, who lived life fully despite having a terminal illness, and a sharing of her insights on dealing with the day-to-day issues of caring for someone with a progressive neurological condition. Scott "often yearned for someone to figuratively take my hand and walk with me through the difficult times; I hope through this book I can reach out to you with encouragement and practical advice."

Last Dance at the Savoy includes a resource guide that provides facts about prime-of-life diseases; contact information for support organizations, research studies and clinical trials; where to find handicap products and equipment; and recommended caregiving publications and family conferences.

Contains a foreword by Yvette Bordelon, MD, PhD, a neurologist at UCLA whose clinical work involves the diagnosis and treatment of movement disorders.

Excerpt:

On a warm midsummer's evening, Geoff and I strolled hand in hand across London's Waterloo Bridge after seeing a play at the National Theatre. Midway, we stopped to gaze across the Thames toward the Strand. At almost ten o'clock, the last glimmers of a startling sunset splashed the sky with flames of amber and crimson, casting a coppery glow on the spires of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. I leaned into Geoff and he held me close, his cheek brushing my hair.

"There," Geoff whispered, nodding toward the shimmering windows of the Savoy Hotel. "That's where we'll have supper."

I squeezed his hand, then tilted my head back for a tender kiss. The Savoy was a perfect choice for our last romantic evening. We'd spent four blissful days and three nights filled with long walks, long lunches and lingering mornings, afternoons and evenings enjoying our time together and talking endlessly. We were still new to each other and savoring the melting euphoria of falling in love. I was in my forties but felt like a giddy teenager--and was behaving like one. I couldn't imagine a moment without Geoff, yet he was leaving on an early flight the following morning, returning to work publishing Los Angeles magazine. I would remain in England, filming on location. We wouldn't see each other again for weeks. I ached at the thought of it and pushed it from my mind, not wanting to spoil our last precious hours together.

As we turned off the Strand into the glittering entryway to the Savoy Hotel, I glimpsed the two of us mirrored in the silvery panels lining the curving walkway. In a fleeting cascade of images, I saw myself clad in a silky dress and strappy high heels, moving in step with Geoff, tall and handsome, his dark hair even curlier in the warm, moist air. He was wearing his new English blazer and the shirt and tie we'd bought for him that afternoon. I squeezed his hand, so proud to be with him.
We had no reservations for dinner, but we hovered only minutes before a matre d' ushered us to a table by a window aglow with lights sparkling along the river walk. Appropriately enough in this shrine to Art Deco, a string orchestra was playing Cole Porter. Geoff ordered champagne, then led me to the dance floor. We danced cheek to cheek to "The Way You Look Tonight," swaying in a gentle embrace, falling in love all over again.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) crept into our lives on cat's paws...

Review
"Scott provides a remarkably personal portrait of a romance that transcended tragedy...Poignant, candid and almost painfully intimate, Last Dance at the Savoy is like having coffee with a close friend and discussing her recent loss. You'll only wish you could take her hand while she talks."―Examiner.com

"Last Dance at the Savoy is ultimately a love story about two people who live life to its fullest in the face of terminal illness. There is no journey more intimate, more arduous, more self-sacrificing than caring for a loved one―and with a spouse, more revealing of what true love is when roles change and one partner becomes more vulnerable and dependent."―Patricia Richardson, actress and national spokesperson for CurePSP

"Last Dance at the Savoyis at once a delicate, moving love story balanced by a cautionary tale. Written with insight and compassion, we understand the struggle and courage required to face a debilitating disease attacking the person at the center of your life."―Susan Sullivan, actress

"Last Dance at the Savoy is a moving chronicle of the daily struggle of caring for a spouse with a debilitating illness, full of honesty, vivid descriptions of emotional and physical challenges and keen observations leavened with wry humor. But it is so much more: Kathryn Leigh Scott has written a love story for the ages that will have universal appeal. This is a deeply affecting and inspirational book."―David Kemp, President, CurePSP

A Beautiful Love Story
By Scott Farris
Kathryn Leigh Scott has written her most personal book so far, and I must say it took me into a world of romance, denial, frustration, compassion, fear, hope, love, pain, and ultimately, acceptance. Ms Scott's writing style perfectly pulled me into her "Last Dance.." and held me captivated until its shattering conclusion. I read the book in less than two days and it has stayed with me ever since. Working in the field of behavioral health, I've treated people diagnosed with neurological diseases (and counseled their care-givers) for years, so I am intimately familiar with the fear, frustration, second guessing, guilt and burn out experienced by all involved. Reading Ms Scott's work, I felt the pain of her husband's decline and the dread of the inevitability of his final outcome. And she took us through this journey without one false note or misstep. Nevertheless, the common thread running through the whole book was love, and how love can carry someone through the most excruciating and devastating of experiences. I know that last statement can sound maudlin and cliched, but its presence in this review is completely sincere. This important work will stay with you long after you've finished reading it and you will be profoundly moved by Ms Scott's resilience, vulnerability, and strength. Highly recommended!

Beautifully honest storytelling
By Helene Galek
Last Dance at the Savoy brilliantly tells the story of caring for a spouse with PSP. And yet, ultimately, it is a love story. Ms Scott deftly weaves the romance and joys of life with her husband throughout the never ending challenges as the symptoms increase with the progression of the disease. Through Ms Scott's talent for storytelling, the reader will feel invited to go on this emotional journey and fully experience the commitment, perseverance and honesty.......as well as the poignant beauty of that last dance.
