A comprehensive and detailed book for anyone into the blade/edge weapon arts. A great read.

This giant 81/2 by 11, 283 page (Way of the Raven: Blade Combatives Vol. 1 by Fernan Vargas) book is one of the most comprehensive texts I have ever read on knife combatives. As someone who has been into the blade arts (Swords, knives, machetes, and other edged weapons) for more than 52 years, I have had the honor and privilege to have trained with numerous instructors. I am proud to say that one of my many instructors in knife combatives was Fernan Vargas, the author of this book. He introduced me to his Apache knife fighting techniques and his own Raven blade system many years ago.
This huge book covers an enormous amount of material. One of the many things I like about the author is that he gives credit to the instructor’s he has learned from over the years, which is what I have always tried to do in my books and manuals. We are not born as instructors or Masters; we earned our rank through years of hard training (with much pain, sweat and tears) from our senior instructors.
There are nineteen chapters in this book and they include the following:
Knife selection and carry, drawing & opening, knife grips, guards, postures and hand positions, stances & postures, foot work, defensive techniques, offensive techniques, obstructed attack solutions, cut & thrust patterns & vital templates, force concepts, conflict anatomy & physiology, the finer points, coyote teaching, the mind, spirit and heart, concepts of precision and voice, drills, raves and insights, and training information. The author draws not just from his own personal Raven Blade System, but from numerous other sources, showing their basic cutting angles and techniques.
My only complaint about this book was the unclear and dark black and white photographs; however, the most important value of this book is the written information it contains from experts in the blade arts. That is worth the price of the book alone. This book has information I had never seen in other blade manuals. This short review cannot do justice to this fantastic book.
If you are into the blade arts this is a book that should be in your personal library.

There is so much knowledge,perspective and inspiration in this book. Master Vargas is a true Martial Artist and Blade Master. Way of Raven will open your eyes to new methods,but more importantly it will inspire you to practice or to begin.
