A General Survey of Recent Developments in Science and Economic Theory...

I really enjoyed this book. But reading the above review made me reconsider the importance I had originally attached to this book. This book should be read by any economist interested in the philosophy of science. And that is why I read it. But I would not suggest that the interested reader begin their study with this book. It is a general survery book. I did not really learn anything truly substantive. What I did take away from this book, however, was a better awareness of what I would like to study in the future. It can also serve as a useful reference for drawing the scattered intellectual puzzle pieces together.

Which brings me to one final point concerning the above review. It seems a bit unfair to criticize the author of this book because he failed to extensively discuss writers who have made important contributions to the theory of economics and the philosophy of science. Throughout the book, indeed at the beginning of nearly every section (roughly every 15-20 pages) the author takes great pains to remind the reader that his discussion of these selected topics are by no means exhaustive -- "they do not even scratch the surface" as he aptly puts it. This gives the reader a deep appreciation of the complexity that has become his study.

I think it is important that more books like this be written. For students like me interested in this field, general survey books like these are much more accessible than scholarly journal articles. The advantage of books like these is that they attempt to collect and present coherently the recent developments that have occurred in certain intellectual circles.

Still muttering in the outhouse

This is a confused and confusing book. It has some value as a comprehensive survey of thought on the topic of methodology in economics and it signals that when Popper is understood as a critical rationalist instead of a falsificationist then he makes a lot of sense. Larry Boland has been saying that for 20 years and he should have got more credit from Hands.

The book has three goals. First, to provide a survey of recent developments in the field of economic methodology. Second, to survey contemporary science theory as it relates to economics. The third "is to convince the reader that we should change the subject". He suggests that we should abandon the 'off the rack' or 'shelf of scientific philosophy' approach to the philosophy of science. This approach consists of trying to find out what economics should be doing to qualify as a proper science. His alternative is to encourage people to think the issues through afresh, to explore the full range of approaches that are available to economists in place of the traditional, largely positivist/empiricist philosophy of science.

Methodology has never had much of a profile among working economists and it had to make its way by attaching itself to the history of ideas in economics which at least had some academic credibility in the form of journals and conferences. However this meant that both the historians and the methodologists occupied a kind of outhouse behind the place where all the real economists lived.

The overwhelming defect in the book is the way that Hands describes the Received View in the philosophy of science as a mixture of logical positivism and falsification interpreted in a positivistic way. Popper is unfortunately misrepresented as an eccentric contributor to the Received View, largely under the influence of Lakatos and his followers, especially Latsis and Blaug. Under the influence of this misrepresentation of Popper's though, a generation of scholars have wasted much of their careers, playing in a kind of intellectual sandpit, off to the side of economics and philosophy, without making a significant contribution to either.
The weakness of the Hands book is demonstrated by the neglect of Boland and Wong. The latter is mentioned twice, in passing, without any hint of the way that he shredded the program that won Samuelson a Nobel Prize for his contribution to methodology in economics. Boland is noted as a man who always resisted the "falsificationist" interpretation of Popper and his books are cited without any hint of the riches to be found in them. This contrasts with the whole chapter on "The Sociological Turn" and hundreds of pages devoted to other dead-ends like feminist methodology.
The best part of the book is where the author depicts Popper as a critical rationalist and shows how this makes sense of Popper's hitherto rather confused exposition of situational analysis and the rationality principle. Given this grasp of Popper (provided by Boland in his first book in 1982) Hands should have junked all the previous pages of criticism of Popper's non-existent "falsificationism".
Unfortunately, despite the wide scope of the material covered in this book, the Austrian school of economic thought does not get a decent mention. Caldwell did rather better on this in "Beyond Positivism". It is quite likely that when Popper is fully understood as a critical rationalist, and when his theory of research programs is also understood, then a highly synergetic combination of Popper and the Austrians may be possible. That man Boland (again) was just about there with his Popper/Hayek model in 1982.
In conclusion, if Hands can fully consolidate his new understanding of Popper (instead of making out that this is a development in Popper's thought rather than his own) then his next book should be shorter and much more helpful. One more thing, it is imperative that work on methodology should be conducted in close contact with work in progress on theories and real-world problems. As C Wright Mills wrote in the superb appendix to "The Sociological Imagination" on intellectual craftsmanship, there must be interludes of discussion of problems, theories and methods, not just one or other of the three. Otherwise the economics profession will never take notice of the mutterings in the outhouse.

THIS BOOK WILL TRANSFORM YOUR MIND & YOUR LIFE

Ladies and Gentlemen, this book will without any doubt change your life, by changing your mind about the concept of "money". So many of us were brought up with the idea of money as a finite resource, which you had to compete for. This book is desgined to release every preconcieved idea that is holding us all back from wealth.
The basic premise of this book is that becoming wealthy is a science, that once understood, and replicated will create wealth in everyone's life. Wealth is as infinite as the creative mind. Create ideas, take action and abundance will flow.
I have read over 200 books on success and wealth, before I read this book. Nothing I had read upto this point had such an incrediblely profound effect on my wealth, because it changed my misconceptions on what it took to become wealthy. Within ten months of applying these principles and concepts, I had expedentially increased my income to levels that would had been unthinkable 12 months earlier.
I would reccomend that every student of this book, also read, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, Money is Easy by Larry Winget, The Einstien Factor Wenger & Poe, Psyco Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz & Born Rich by Bob Proctor. All these books will enhance your understanding of this incredible book.

Practical, Hands-on Assistance; and Many Original Ideas

This new release is a reprint of the original 1910 edition of Wallace Wattles' guide to financial success and personal growth. Make sure that you get the new 2002 Iceni Books edition, and not some of the other versions that are around, which have been made unusable by editing. Wattles' book is a true classic in the genre, and it has been mentioned along with such other classics like George Clason's "The Richest Man In Babylon" and Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich." It was always a surprise to me, that this book, in full original title "The Science of Getting Rich or Financial Success Through Creative Thought," is less well-known than the titles mentioned above. While Clason's book, in the essence, is a tale about the workings of exponential growth, and Hill's book is little more than the repetition of the formula, "whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve," in Wattles' book there is much more to be found.
Wattles, like Hill, also emphasizes the importance of using one's power of thought, and one's willpower, as an indispensable ingredient on the way to get rich. But Wattles with his suggestions is way ahead of Hill, because he does not think exclusively along egoistical lines, as does Hill. Throughout the book he warns the reader of acquiring riches in a competitive way, and strongly advises to do any business in a creative way instead. He asserts that the reader should never compete for what is already there, but should instead create something of value, be it a product, or a service. This thought alone is a revelation. Wattles makes unmistakably clear that only in that way it is possible for everyone to get rich. Instead of keeping others down by competition, if you strive to get rich in a creative way, you inspire other people to do so as well, and open up a way for others to follow.

I am issuing here, however, some kind of a warning to you: Wattles grounds his science on the ideas of oriental philosophies, which state that there exists one original substance in the universe, where all things originate from. To back up that notion, he mentions that this idea was also held by many western philosophers, like Hegel, and Emerson, and requires the reader to accept the truth of this notion by faith. I cannot say that I am a believer in the one substance, and still, I have learned some of my most important lessons from Wattles. So do not be put off by that esoteric concept, but concentrate instead on the solid foundations of financial and personal success that Wattles hands over to you. I am convinced that Wattles in this book says all that you need for success.

Yep -- The Best Ever

I watched the first twenty minutes of the DVD of "The Secret" (it's offered free on their website), and thought it was really hokey. It felt like they were trying to make a "Da Vinci Code" production out of it. To my knowledge, no "authorities throughout history" have ever tried to keep "the Secret" (i.e., the Law of Attraction) from humanity.

But I was curious about the book that inspired "The Secret's" creator, so I checked out Wallace Wattles' "The Science of Getting Rich."

Wow! And Super-Wow! Wattles has nailed all the self-help books (all the great ones anyway) that I've ever read and put it all in one slim volume. And I can state confidently, "This is the foundational book for fulfilling your life. You'll never need to read another one about 'getting the life you want.'"

For those of you who doubt, or just plain ridicule, the idea that you can get what you want by simply focusing on it and ceasing to focus on what you DON'T want, I recommend this experiment:

For one week, carry two little notepads with you, everywhere you go. Each notepad should have a different colored cover so they're easily identifiable. Label one "Positive" and the other "Negative."

As you go through your week, every time you hear, see or feel something positive in your surroundings, put a check mark in the "Positive" notepad. Every time you hear, see or feel something negative in your surroundings, put a checkmark in the "Negative" notepad. Do this for EVERYTHING you take in, whether it involves you personally or not--chats with friends, news reports, conversations you overhear on the bus, etc. If you're taking it in, put a checkmark in the appropriate notepad.

Be sure, especially, to include all the entertainment you see or hear. Be conscious of the story, the lyrics, etc. Is the message negative about life no matter how hilarious or thought-provoking it is? (A great example would be "Borat.") If so, put a checkmark in the "Negative" notepad.

At the end of the week, total the checkmarks in each notepad. If you have more negative checkmarks than positive ones (and I suspect you'll have many more), ask yourself how you can possibly get ANYTHING you want from life when you're taking in all that negativity, day after day? The answer is, you can't--because you don't have the Life Energy for it. All that negativity is draining it out of you.

By focusing only on what your heart desires, and believing unconditionally that those things are yours to have, you connect to the Universe which gave you those desires in the first place, and intends for you to fulfill them, in the name of Creation. As Wattles says again and again, the Universe wants you to have these things even more than you do. But you can't connect to the Universe as long as you're filling your head with the noise and negativity of the outside world.

"The Science of Getting Rich" will show you exactly how to "tune out and tune in," so you can have the wonderful life you were created for.

Give it a try. The only thing you've got to lose is a life you never wanted in the first place.

It has been twenty long years since the Dark Shogun’s victory at the Great War. After the war, everyone expected peace. Everyone wanted peace.

But in the twenty years since the war there has been only fear and uncertainty and oppression.

The Shogun, with the approval of Emperor Yozei, has outlawed the Samurai class and the public display of swords.

He has outlawed the use of Ninja and the practice of Ninjutsu.
He has outlawed the Kensei order, the legendary Sword Saints of Japan.

After the Kensei surrendered, he began systematically dismantling the great Samurai clans.
The Shogun's army would be the only military force.

The Ninja clans retreated to their secret mountain villages.
The great Samurai clans chose to fight.
They were crushed.
The Shogun's army is too massive. Too ruthless.

The Dark Shogun now rules the country with absolute power.
Some say he is invincible. Some say he is a God.

Only a handful of Samurai clans remain. Only a handful of Kensei warriors remain.

But not for long…

Y so short. The first and second and third would probably be a good book. They could smoosh together the remaining ones. Otherwise nice job.

Fun!

Very fun series, couldn't put it down. Love fantasy Samurai stories! To those writing negative reviews, relax. It's not a grammatical work of art but so what. This is a more than legible story that is a ton of fun, and by the way, it's fiction not a history book. Now where is Part 7?!!

Give me the whole book at once.

I got tired of purchasing a few chapters at a time. Just give me the whole book at once and stop the nickel and dime approach.
