One day Millenium [sic] Boy decided to grab his hobo stick, his bandana, and his Swiss Army knife, bid his mom goodbye, and head off on a quest for adventure. Joined by his best friend Steve (weapon: baseball bat; clothing: wife beater, cargo pants and sandals), they soon find themselves in a violent altercation with two other adventure seekers. It ends badly for their antagonists (“Whoa, check it out, dude! You actually knocked this dude’s brain right out of his cranium!”) and Millenium Boy and Steve become the proud owners of fancy weapons upgrades (a crowbar and a steel chain). So on they trek, and the next inductee to their group is the muscle-bound Lash Penis.

And then things start getting weird!

Readers of 2009’s Red Monkey Double Happiness Book will recognize Joe Daly’s delightfully unique stoner/philosopher dialogue and distinctive character designs, but the hilarious over-the-top Role Playing Game action (complete with periodic updates for each character’s status in ten criteria, including “dexterity,” “intelligence,” and “money”) propel this new story into a heretofore unachieved action-comedy realm. Fun fun fun

I want to go on a dungeon quest. Surreal but fun, no profound themes explored, exactly what you need sometimes. Bit of gore and puerile humour, all in fun. Boycentric ( is that a word) but boys are silly. (girls can be silly too).

A Fun Story For Fans of Roll Playing

Let me address what you’re getting into with this book. The F-bomb is dropped seven times in the first seven panels and doesn’t go down tremendously for the rest of the book. Early in the book a guy is hit in the head so hard his skull cracks open and his brain, still attached by the stem, is left lying on the pavement. He’s then dispatched with a final blow with a crowbar to his exposed brain. This is not a book for everyone. My sister is a decades long D&D fan but with the level of profanity, violence, drug use and male genitals I know this would not be her cup of tea. If the subject matter of the book doesn’t scare you off please read on.

Dungeon Quest is an awesome idea for a book. If you’ve ever played Dungeon’s and Dragon’s or an RPG video game you’ll be able to relate. There is also a generous mix of Lord of the Rings. It’s debatable whether this book is an homage or a mocking of a Live action role-playing game (LARP). Why is the main character named Millennium Boy and why does he have an enlarged cranium like a 1950’s future boy? No idea. Joe Daly is just having fun and making sense isn’t important. Our main character, Millennium Boy, gathers up a group of friends and mild acquaintances in order to embark on an adventure around his home city of Glendale and then on into the forest of Fireburg Forest. After engaging in battles the group will loot the corpses of their defeated opponents acquiring weapons, armor and magic items. Item’s like ‘Woolen Beanie of Insulation’ and ‘Crowbar of the Scorpion’. Following a successful encounter the characters stats rise and it’s all done tongue in cheek as they somehow seem aware of their own stats. They even choose character types with Millennium Boy endeavoring to become a Grand Mage and his friend Steve working towards Master Thief.

This is not intended to be a semi-realistic story of a Larp and about a quarter of the way through the book they encounter actual monsters that burrow up from under the ground and then skeletons. I wouldn’t categorize this book as humor. Although there are funny parts it’s not laugh out loud funny. I would call it amusing and surreal. It feels like a concept that would come from the mind of a junior high student. That is, if the artist had writing and drawing skills far beyond the normal junior highs school student. Although I wouldn’t categorize the art as stunning it does have a charm and I particularly liked the landscapes and forests which are well done. Joe Daly doesn’t go for the cheap dumb laughs like a lot of D&D parodies try for. The humor is more in the outrageousness of events and the clever banter between some of the characters. I was amused that Nerdgirl, the archer, is a very average looking girl and never says a single word through the entire book. The barbarian, Lash Penis (yes, that’s his name), is not as bereft of speaking but says very little leaving all the conversation to Millennium Boy and Steve. Oh, and everyone but everyone is a self-proclaimed poet. Well, actually I don’t know about Nerdgirl since she never says anything.

If you’re cool with profanity, violence, pot smoking and full frontal male nudity this is a fun book. If you’ve not then I suggest avoiding it.

The Best Book on Kalachakra?

This book is an excellent resource and can be highly recommended to those preparing to take a Kalachakra initiation, such as the upcoming one in Toronto, April-May 2004. HH the Dalai Lama gives one or two Kalachakra initiations every year, so this book should be very valuable in future as well.
The book is comprised of two parts: an introduction by Jeffrey Hopkins (first 150 pages) and the commentary/teaching of the Dalai Lama throughout the actual initation (the rest of the book), plus a few texts on 6-session guruyoga and a sadhana at the end.
The introduction is excellent, explaining the sutra and tantra path, with a wonderful chapter on emptiness that is very clear and concise, and one of the best explications I have seen! This section alone is worth the price of the book. It explains the Kalachakra mandala (and there are some good color glossy photos inside) with all the deities as well.
The second section is even more incredible, as this is the actual text of what HH the Dalai Lama explained throughout the actual initiation. This would be very valuable for those preparing for such an initiation, or perhaps wanting to go back to understand it more deeply.
Combined, these two sections make this book invaluable. It is also beautifully made, with a great glossy cover, very durable, and glossy pages that are nice to read. Treasure it!
Also recommended: Glenn Mullin's "The Practice of Kalachakra", Alexander Berzin's book on Kalachakra, and "Highest Yoga Tantra" by Daniel Cozort.

Tenzin Gyatso. Kalachakra Tantra Rite of Initiation rules!

This is an absolute must have if you either have attended or plan to attend the Kalachakra initiation. It has the text of the actual previous initiation given in Wisconsin in 1981. When I attended the Bloomington initiation in 1999, we followed the text almost word for word. Sometimes it's hard to understand the translator over earphones, but with book in hand, I had no problem at all. And it's essential to read ahead of time so that the experience has meaning. In addition, this book has been a friend and companion in daily practice since the initiation. (If you're new to the process, part of what you sign up for is to practice six times a day for the rest of your life.) The text has the actual daily practices as well. Hopkins' introduction is the equivalent of a college course. I thought, arrogantly, that I was prepared by having read a few books on Kalachakra and having practiced other deity yogas for several years. Only after studying did I find how much I have to learn. I've read this book many times, and will continue to do so. It takes on more sophistocation as I grow in my practice. My usual reaction on re-reading is like, "Oh, no, that's what I vowed to do--wish I had realized it at the time."

Clear, Profound, Essential

This book is the perfect reference to begin with if one is engaging in the practice of the Kalachakra Tantra. The profound complexity of the practice with its visualizations of mandalas, hundreds of deities adorned in myriad ornaments, in the ten directions with their surroundings, who is doing what, why they are doing it, what is happening at any given moment in the practice...It requires explanation in detail, and Jeffrey Hopkins along with Kundun are masterful.

That said, even more essential to the practice of ANY Highest Yoga Tantra is to do so WITH THE GUIDANCE OF A QUALIFIED GURU WHO IS WELL VERSED IN THE PRACTICE! No book, no number of books, can replace the guidance of your Teacher. It is my kind lama who required me to read this book, and I go to him with my questions and thoughts. The Lightning Vehicle is fraught with pitfalls for the unwary and unwise-and so after being initiated or Empowered, a wise and kind teacher is essential to the practice.

For those of us who do this as our daily practice, this book will be completely invaluable.

There are many different indicators in today's world demonstrating that humanity has reached a new level of awareness and appreciation for its own existence. If we look at the shifts in the types of occupations being pursued (and sought after), the abundance of life coaches and personal development mentors is like a mirror held up to our collective psyche. It seems to say that life is a precious experience, and we simply want to be sure that we're present for it in every way possible. To coin a somewhat overused phrase: We seek to live authentically.

In 1977, long before having a "life coach" was something commonly discussed at Starbucks, Dr. Cherie Carter-Scott published her first book on the subject and began a career that eventually, would find her labeled, "The Mother of Coaching." New Species (published in 1978) was to become the first of many books Dr. Scott would write on personal development. The long list includes, "Negaholics," a series of `Rules' books - including "If Life is a Game, These are the Rules," and her most recent work, "Transformational Life Coaching."

Transformation Life Coaching throws open the doors to Life Coaching School and invites us all inside. Although written for those who either are, or espouse to become, mentors in the transformational movement, this book is an accessible "how to" for anyone. It welcomes all those who have spent time seeking to develop a better appreciation with their own life and how they intend to live it. Chapter 1 literally outlines what to look for and how to choose a coach, offering twenty-five important questions to discuss during the interview process.

In this book, Dr. Scott has created a virtual concordance of information, challenges for personal thought patterns and judgment, practical exercise and reference tools to use over and over. Embracing many global teachings, Dr. Scott often refers to the different chakras, or energy centers, as tools to release the ego and be of maximum service to others. As she explains, "You are in the process of opening up and taking control of your power," and by deeply understanding each energy center, we will be able to literally, "open and close each chakra at will."

Imagine being able to consciously open the fifth chakra (which controls speech and communication) in order to more fully participate in our marriage or work relationships - or being able to close down our first chakra, which embodies survival and security, so that we might be more risky and daring in our professional roles or fearlessly take on new adventures in life.

Dr. Scott has spent most of her professional life traveling the world and sharing her expertise on personal empowerment and development at every turn. On her website she shares that, "Writing a book is not done with the wave of a wand. It takes time to reflect and soul search for the universal truths related to each developmental phase." These same words could definitely be applied to the very journeys that Dr. Scott encourages us to make with our lives.

What we know about coaching is that it is not only sought after, but it is necessary in today's fast-paced world of endless challenges. From corporate teams to softball teams, being coached and coaching others on how to live as appreciatively and authenticity as possible is a proactive way to turn roadblocks into paving stones on your road of success.

Are you looking for continuous growth and limitless improvement?

If you have read other coaching books but you want to read a book that offers you limitless possibilites to grow and engage growth and improvement to those around you....then this is the book!
I am responsibile for leadership and diversity in my worklife and I have read many good books on coaching, but this is a great book that offers guiding principles on how to execute the coaching process.
Many coaching books speak in theory but this books speaks in practicality and my entire staff will be reading this book. Dr. Carter-Scott will be helping us develop a training around this incredible process.
So, if you want growth and to provide support and reinforce your current knowledge - then this is the book you MUST have. Dr. Carter-Scott is truly amazing and a transformational writer.

A great blend of biomechanics and practical application that anyone can follow. The sample program and accessory exercises are great. As a strength and conditioning coach myself, I use these same strategies with my athletes and have seen great result.

Definitely recommend

Great resource for anyone wanting to improve their deadlift. NOT just for beginners wanting to figure out how to get the more impressive weights up, but also those of us that are experienced.
As a coach myself who has changed focus and needs to look to others for the finer points on improving my own lifts and those of my clients, Eric's guide has been brilliant in helping me and a number of my clients explode our lifts up of the last few weeks.
Definitely recommend.

D'Agata (Halls of Fame) avows love of the diversity of the essay form, and it is palpable on every page of this unique, esoteric, beautiful book. He tells the reader that he first became enamored of essays when his mother read him the news of the day while he was still in her womb. It is this kind of fantastic, myth-making perspective that runs through each entry of this anthology, whose contributors include such master essayists as John McPhee, Susan Sontag, Joan Didion and Annie Dillard. Hopping from one genre to another-biography, poetry, philosophy, travel writing, memoir-D'Agata makes the point that the essay is not just one form of writing but can be every form of writing. Although it may occasionally seem that D'Agata has chosen a selection to illustrate how erudite he is-such as Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's "Erato Love Poetry," a set of bewildering fragments and (literally) blank white space-many other choices convey the wondrously infinite possibilities of the essay form. Standouts include "Unguided Tour," Sontag's cranky philosophical dialogue with her inner self; "Life Story," David Shields's string of aphorisms composed entirely of bumper sticker slogans; "Ticket to the Fair," David Foster Wallace's colorful, compassionate tour of the Illinois State Fair; and "The Body," Jenny Boully's postmodern pastiche of autobiographical (or not) footnotes. D'Agata's idea of an essay-or lyric essay, as he comes to call these writings- conflates both art and fact, blurring the line between objectivity and subjectivity. The lyric essay, he says, has a "kind of logic that wants to sing." Readers, listen up, then: here is a book that makes some beautiful music.

Choosing one essay to represent each year up to the present, D'Agata begins in 1975 not only because it's the year of his birth but also because that's when John McPhee, grand master of what became known as creative nonfiction, published "The Search for Marvin Gardens," a shimmering hybrid of personal observations and lovingly recited facts about the board game Monopoly. I got this for my kid so she can read the next American essay but I suppose there will be a sequel since there will always be another American essay. Maybe they should look into a subscription model for American essays with the next one automatically coming in the mail.

Some good writing, some good theory

You don't have to like John D'Agata or some of his showier cultural stunts to like this work. He does a good job of backgrounding and contextualizing experimental nonfiction, and some of the selections in here are to die for (a personal essay told deftly and funnily in only footnotes? Tell me you didn't wish you'd thought of that first). Anyone in a creative writing nonfic track or studying contemporary lit should find this a worthwhile read.

Nice book, but not a travel guide

I was looking for more information on things to do in the Monterey Area and this was more of an informational guide on animals and areas to find them. Well done, but not really a "travel guide" and not set up like one.

An essential guide to the Monterey area!

Only having less than a week to visit this beautiful, stunning area of CA, I found this book to be indispensable. It made a short trip a quality trip by the descriptions of everything in and around Monterey. I loved the photography as well! Although my trip was nearly 2 years ago, I still flip thru this book on occasion to dream about my next trip, and YES I'm going back! There is so much I that I missed due to my short stay, but thanks to this book I got to see my preffered highlights and I wouldn't change a thing.

Monterey is a very visually stunning area, my absolute favorite having visited in the US so far, and this book is a great way to ensure you see what you want to see.

Nooks and Crannies

Like the English Muffin, the Monterey Shoreline is filled with nooks and crannies. (And, at the height of the season, they can be jammed. Heh, Heh). This book is especially helpful in guiding you to some of the least accessible but most worthwhile stretches. It's not inaccessible in the sense that you need a four-wheel drive vehicle to plow your way to the site; rather, some of these beaches are so tucked away that you could miss them, or spy them but not be able to figure out how to get to them. (Eolian Dunes Preserve may be partially visible from Route 1, but it is accessible on a path under Route 1 that you reach from a parking area on the warehouse access road behind Orchard Supply in Seaside. This book tells you to go there, corner of Playa and Metz.) This book helps you choose your spots, and then get to them.

While I like the trail descriptions and access guidance, I also appreciate the fact that this book is loaded with bits of historical info, and tips on what evidence of human activity to look for. Not to mention loads of info on the flora and fauna of the area.

The book is also very helpful as a sampler. there are good sections on Elkhorn Slough and the opening up of Ford Ord. You can find lots more info on these sites on the internet,but this book will be the one to get you interested in those areas initially.

So, a great companion and a wonderful insider introduction to the area. And great for an armchair explorer getting ready to visit the Bay. A very nice find.
