Still the best book for married couples.

There are a whole lot of resources for married couples but I still believe after 35 years, this is the best resource to hand your newly married or about to be married son or daughter. It is so well-written so balanced. Dr. Dobson recommended this for so many years back in the 80s when we first were married. You will not be disappointed by the gems of wisdom in this little book. Best advice? Ask them to read it together when you give it to them.

A book for all marriages/newly wed or experienced

This is a fantastic "point-of-reference" book. Being newly married, I wish I had this before getting married. I will give my daughter a copy when she is old enough. It's great advice for your relationship with your spouse. I will flip through different sections in the book for refreshers when I need them. If you would like some advice/how-to's for your marriage, I would highly recommend buying this book. LOVE IT. That is all :D

Highly Recommended--read and enjoy the benefits

This is a great book. My husband and I read it together many years ago and have recommended it & given away numerous copies of it to couples that we know. If more people would read this book, take it seriously and do what Dr. Wheat says to do, there would be many more happily married couples and fewer failed marriages. However, I find that few people really want to change their old habits and are serious about doing what it takes to have a great marriage relationship. But it is totally worth it. My husband always tells people to read the chapter about BEST (bless, edify, share, touch). Just do it!!

Love this book!! Similar to Irma Bombeck's style, Kerr is hysterical! Even though this book was originally published in the 1950s much of the content is familiar to today's women and the things we think about. Hope you can find a copy. :)

Devoured in one day

I devoured this thing in a single day; it's easily written, in a folksy English - something that I found interesting as a small trip back to the '80s (though arguly to even before that as he grew up in the Great Depression).

I found this book immensely interesting for two main points: 1) to get an inside view of what McDonald's thinks of McDonald's - especially with the largely negative view I would say the public has for this food chain; and 2) given that it's an autobiography - to see the first hand account of one of our greater rags to riches stories and the man who really did create a new industry.

It's a fast paced story told marvelously - and I never found myself bored or skipping pages...until at least the very end when he went into detail regarding his time with the baseball team.

It will be interesting having read this, to compare against the story that will be told in the upcoming film 'The Founders', the John Lee Hancock film about the founding of McDonald's. I wish there was a more updated and more unbiased look into this story, as I'm sure that a book written 30 years after the fact (and by the founder no less) would be subject to some factual nuances.

But in the end, I found it quite inspiring to look into his life - to learn and understand how he really did have to 'grind it out' to even get to the point of understanding the future surrounding the McDonald's brothers' premise.

HE HAD IT HIS WAY

A must read for all entrepreneurs. Certainly not as detailed as the biography written by Love, This autobiography of Ray Kroc is both entertaining and insightful. What he did prior to the inspiration of McDonalds across the world led up to this multi-national business of great impact and success. I think you will enjoy the insights from a man borne circa 1900 and how he was led to his position of prominence and wealth. I would read the autobiography first and then the biography written by Love secondly. This is a man who would not compromise the values of his employees nor his customers. And he used the KISS system to run and control his franchisees .He and Sam Walton had similar objectives and goals. And their outcomes were similar. Would make for a great How To book. And the rest is history. And success stories are so darn good reading that you won't be able to put these books down for long and you will recommend them to every business person you know. Good reading.

Ray Kroc and Sam Walton were business contemporaries, although obviously plying their trade in different industries. Walton was the Midwestern/Southern uber-WASP who attended church every Sunday, loved to quail hunt, actively participated in the local Chamber of Commerce, was an Eagle Scout, etc. You get the picture. On the other hand, Kroc (also a Midwesterner) was a high school dropout who once landed a gig playing piano in a bordello. Ray Kroc was married three times, swore with the best of them, drank with the boys, and generally led a colorful life. So if you buy Grinding It Out, be prepared to meet an extremely earthy character!

I just love this book because you get a real feel for who Ray Kroc was as a person. The book is breezy, chatty, a super easy read that is packed with fascinating anecdotes. The parts about Kroc's dealings with the McDonald brothers out of San Bernardino (via New Hampshire, of all places!) are just terrific.

To me, when a book is informative, fun and genuinely inspirational, you've got a winning combination -- and that is what you have in Grinding It Out.

Despite the great toil required in making cloth and clothing, most books on ancient history and economics have no information on them. While men dominated early agriculture, women for millennia took primary responsibility for sewing, weaving textiles and making clothing. In this beautifully illustrated study, Barber ( Prehistoric Textiles ) retrieves an important chapter in the history of civilization by drawing on archeological evidence, ancient texts, myths and linguistics to reconstruct women's paramount role in the fiber arts until the start of the late Bronze Age, about 1500 B.C., when, Barber observes, the advent of commercial textiles brought men to the looms. In prehistoric Europe, women invented elaborate textiles with complex designs; women of ancient Anatolia ran cloth-making establishments. Barber begins her saga with the description of a Paleolithic "Venus figure" that dates from about 20,000 B.C. and is carved wearing a skirt woven of loose strings. Ranging from Egypt to Greece to Sumatra, covering the period from 20,000-500 B.C., Barber illuminates women's changing social status as makers of cloth and clothing.

In this age of ready-to-wear clothing and shopping malls, we sometimes forget that for the first 20,000 years of human existence, all textiles-from everyday clothing to ship's sails-were made by women (and sometimes men) who used a hand spindle to spin threads and a loom to weave the threads into cloth. As an archaeologist and a knowledgeable weaver capable of reproducing the cloth remnants she is studying, Barber is ideally qualified to investigate early textile production and its relation to women's changing roles in ancient societies. Here she reconstructs the history of textiles (primarily in Europe and the Near East), based on the hard evidence of archaeology, geology, art, and ancient texts. Her approach is scholarly yet presupposes no practical knowledge of textile production on the part of the reader. Highly recommended for academic and larger public libraries.

Employing diverse, thorough methodologies and research sources, the author of Prehistoric Textiles (not reviewed) traces the roles of women and cloth through 20,000 years of history. Prehistoric women primarily worked with food and clothing, neither likely to survive the elements, and male historians traditionally felt little need or desire to write about cloth and textiles; thus, much of women's work history has been lost, and we are left with few details for reconstruction. However, Barber's innovative research found that ``data for ancient textiles lay everywhere, waiting to be picked up.'' By reproducing remnants of ancient cloth and garments, she also reproduced women's actual labor, which often required hours upon hours of tedious, painstaking work. Her justification for the assumption of female responsibility for cloth rests on their childbearing and -rearing duties. Women needed to stay close to home, and they required work compatible with youngsters running around--labor that could be interrupted when necessary. According to Barber, women held important positions in society as the primary producers of clothing for millennia, even into the age of emerging capitalist economies. She also deduces, from the patterns and designs of ancient material, that clothing for both sexes served as a visual means to communicate such information as fertility and marital status. (For example, many skirt remnants hold designs assumed to follow the shape of and emphasize the pubic bone.) Although this seems a logical conclusion, there's not really any empirical evidence for it. Illuminates the crucial role of "women's work" in the development of settled human communities

I enjoyed this book tremendously. At once scholarly and accessible, the book illuminates the lives of women in the Neolithic by creative and multidisciplinary means. A wonderful example of feminist scholarship (although I don't know what the author would make of that description!), she finds valuable information in discarded shreds of cloth, overlooked details in myths, and personal knowledge of the crafts being studied. The lives of these women come vividly to life, as well as their essential role in the development of settled communities. Her impressive breadth of knowledge allows her to support her arguments with archeological, linguistic, ethnographic evidence and more. A tremendous contribution to our understanding of human cultural development - the importance of string, for example - and the primary role of women in that development

I have the hard back copy first edition and I wanted a portable version so I purchased it for my Kindle and smartphones. This is a fantastic well written book detailing the early history of textiles and their role in history. Its interesting to read and easy to understand. This book isn't just for women but for everyone as it gives you a great understanding into the labor intensive process of early textile production.

This is a wonderful book about the history of textiles. After reading this, history will never be the same. For thousands of years, an overwhelming portion of human labor revolved around textiles. Who knew? Anyone interested in anthropology, archeology, women, or clothes will love this. It is one of those books that you can never forget.

Great Animation Tool

This is my fourth year using Maya, and this book has a wealth of information. The video/project tutorials assist in quick references and techniques to navigate the program. You should be mindful how to apply these techniques to your individual projects. All graphics are legible and easy to understand; the character models change with each issue.

Good info, bad Kindle layout

This is a great book with lots of helpful info but I bought the Kindle edition to carry with me on my iPad and the formatting SUCKS!!! It is all screwed up. One page will have section 1, then 4, then 3 then 6... makes no sense. Don't you guys check your work? It does have great info but I feel cheated that it's so hard to read.

Exceeds expectations... clear screen shots, no disc (as expected) but website downloads (as expected) is far more sensible IMHO.

Revised for Maya 2014 and new features used in exercises. Lot of tips and asides from an authority on animation.

About the Author
Mike Westbrook was manager of technological research with Ford Motor Company at Dunton, Essex, and has now retired after 33 years in the automotive industry. He has also been Visiting Professor at Southampton University, Chairman of the IEE Computing and Control Division (1983-4), Vice-President of the Institute of Physics (1992-6) and IEE Faraday Lecturer (1987-8). He has been author or co-author of 29 technical papers and a book Automotive Sensors (IOP 1994), as well as lecturing extensively in the UK and USA.

Excellent overview of electric cars

The Electric Car gives an excellent overview of electric cars. And as promised by the subtitle, Westbrook discusses the development and future of battery, hybrid and fuel-cell cars. All in all, this book is the best I have found on this important subject. I recommend it highly.

As interest increases in electric cars, particularly hybrids, books on the subject increase as well. Some are interesting and helpful. A surprisingly large amount are not. Few, if any, match the depth and breadth of the information and opinion in The Electric Car.

Westbrook spent his career working with electric cars. That shows in the book's detailed information and patient discussion. This is a book by an industry insider, who knows what he is talking about. What he does not know, he finds out, through contacts in the industry that he keeps active.

Westbrook does tend a little toward the pedantic. And he loves a long and complex sentence. No fluffy reading here. In fact, the book can be hard to get through if you are tired and not at the best of your game.

Nonetheless, if you have strong interest in electric cars, in my opinion you need this book.

Good introductory book

This book provides an accurate history of electric and hybrid cars, however it may be a bit lacking in terms of charting the future of electric cars and their power sources. All in all a solid buy for a intoduction to electric car technology.

works for me, with caveat

Well written. Slightly outdated for 2011, but a good introduction for me. Not for people without electronics or mechanical knowledge. I don't work in electronics, but I completed a two year electronics tech program. This book speaks to me, but my non-electronics friends wouldn't have a clue what to make of it. The IEE Power & Energy Series is pretty cool in general!
