I Will Not Sit Idly By
By Szolpzilla
Let me start by thanking Laura for her *real* review of this book on Amazon. As a Dermatillomania sufferer for roughly 13 years now, I am always skittish about "new revelations" and "miracle cures" out there for my (our) condition (and I've tried most of them). By now I (we) have well discovered that there is no one set miracle cure for Derm (or Trich). It is truly case by case, as with most BFRB. The fact that Amy is trying to proclaim her methods as a cure isn't even what is most upsetting. Maybe the methods outlined in her book did, in fact, work for her. That would be wonderful. However, her claim that "I am absolutely sure this will work for you. Why? Because it has worked for me and others. I am so sure that I guarantee it 100%" is atrocious and extraordinarily misleading. What credentials or statistics does Amy have to offer to support this claim? But I digress. As I said, that's not even my point here.
My point is that Amy is a liar. A fabricator. A fraud. Let's start with the reviews of this book on Amazon. There are two. One by Laura Barton, a long time, vocal member of many online Derm forums and then the other review by "Chef". No one in the Derm community knows who this person is. And let's face it, we're pretty close. So let's look closer. "Chef" (whom I have taken the liberty of reporting to Amazon for abuse, by the way) has seven total Amazon reviews, and every single one of them is regarding an "Amy Foxwell product". Every. Single. One. Three of which all occurred on the same day (3/6/13). Exceedingly troublesome.
Moving on. Looking at the actual content of the book, key points are almost identical to Ms. Foxwell's other book: Eyelash Pulling: How to Cure Eyelash and Eyebrow Trichotillomania. Take a look here for the photographic evidence:[...]. Not "similar" as Foxwell says, but identical. My (our) conclusion? Ms. Foxwell merely copy/pasted large portions of Eyelash Pulling, interchanging the terms "eyelash pulling" with "skin picking". (And not always successfully. Hair picking? What is that, Amy? A copy/paste blunder if I ever saw one!)
Additionally, examples of Ms. Foxwell's love of the copy/paste function are apparent when comparing that blog and review with interview to Angie's blog here: [...]. Many replies are IDENTICAL (again, not "similar"). She cannot even be bothered to tailor her canned responses to accurately answer the actual questions posed to her.
Amy Foxwell's blatant attempt to capitalize off of desperate, unsuspecting Derm/Trich sufferers is disgusting, obvious, and deplorable. With such a small (relatively speaking), tight-knit community such as ours, did she really think that she wouldn't be found out? That we wouldn't talk to each other? Her behavior toward us is almost indicative of someone who hasn't, in fact, suffered with our condition(s) at all. Another lie, perhaps?
Shame on you, Amy. Shame.
We will not be preyed upon.

Nothing New, Save Your Money
By Laura Barton
Amy Foxwell's book Skin Picking: How to Cure Dermatillomania is a book that promises to help any skin picker stop picking at their skin through the methods she mentions within the pages. However, this book is nothing more than a rehashing of anything you can find on the internet despite the supposed "extensive research" that went into writing this book, with tips like stay away from mirrors, don't beat yourself up over it, recognize it's an actual disorder, find other activities to do and journal your progress. It is repetative, contradictory in some areas, and comes across more as a cash grab and product push for her Pick Stop Oil; it even opens with a product disclaimer at the beginning of the text. In addition to this, the book seems to be nothing more than a copy of one or both of her trichotillomania books, as it addresses eyelash pulling and hair picking in two areas, rather than skin picking, suggesting that she copied and pasted the text and forgot to change the wording in those sentences. Overall, this book is disappointing, especially if Amy Foxwell is actually a skin picker and hair puller because she should understand the suffering of the disorders and she shouldn't want to be making money off of sufferers.
Save your money, don't buy it.

Good manual even if it is short
By wondersowm
I actually really liked the oil and manual. The oil works really well to stop the itchy feeling and I found her ideas really positive and I think they will work. She does say at the beginning of the book that there is no known cure to picking but success with overcoming it is possible. My picking has reduced since using the oil and now I am going to start the other strategies since I bought the manual after the oil. The worksheet is similar to one I am using with my psychologist. The manual is short and it isn’t a book but it is full of useful information. I am really hopeful that this will help me stop and I think it will.
