Great Read, Hard to Put Down

Flying Backwards follows the journey of a woman living a sheltered life in a small town. Stuck in a rut composed of a dead end relationship, a boring office job, and a family business she has little interest in, Eleanor Clark yearns for new experiences and adventures. Gathering all the courage she can muster she applies for a job as an international Flight Attendant. Jennifer W Smith's detailed description of the training Eleanor must go through is both intense and suspenseful. Throughout the book Ms. Smith takes Eleanor on an odyssey of self discovery as she fulfills her need to change her life. The colorful descriptions of the experiences Eleanor encounters as she explores european cities adds to the excitement of this truly captivating book. Things get really interesting (and spicy!) as Eleanor encounters romance and some tough choices. Flying Backwards is as thought-provoking as it is engaging as Eleanor struggles with the challenges of what it's like to figure out what one wants in life. Tough to put down, this book will thoroughly entertain you with Eleanor's adventures.

Lovable characters, great read!

I read this romance in less than a week, and I loved it. The main character Eleanor is a strong and determined lady who makes one decision, which changes her life completely with surprising twists and turns. The descriptions of the places she visits as a flight attendant are excellent, the characters believable, and the three men male love interests make it an enjoyable read. I will be checking out further books by Jennifer Smith.

Flying Backwards is a wonderful story about a woman taking charge of her life, taking changes. The characters are easy to relate to and the predicaments Eleanor gets into are fun to follow. Great, easy to read, feel good book!
This story is a sweet romantic adventure with lovely details of foreign cities. I highly recommend it!

About the Author

Gene Edward Veith Jr. (PhD, University of Kansas) is provost and professor of literature at Patrick Henry College and the director of the Cranach Institute at Concordia Theological Seminary. He has been a columnist for World magazine and TableTalk, and is the author of a number of noted books on Christianity and culture, including God at Work.

Marvin Olasky (PhD, American Culture, University of Michigan) is the editor-in-chief of World Magazine. He has been interviewed numerous times by the national media as the developer of the concepts of compassionate conservatism and biblically objective journalism and is the author of twenty books.

Great overview of the key issues

This is about the third book I've read by Gene Veith and I enjoy his clear writing style very much. This book has a helpful overview of the main genres of literature and their place in the Christian worldview. The real gems in this book are Veith's discussions of Fiction and Fantasy. There would certainly be crossover into the realm of filmmaking for the thoughtful Christian screenwriter. I also found the end chapters on the development of literature throughout history, and how Christians interacted and critiqued the errors of their day a helpful corrective to much of the existential Christian nonsense which tries to pass itself off as "Christian literature" these days. My only disappointment is Veith's repeated use of Madeline L'Engle as a positive example of a Christian author. Certainly, she has some spiritual overtones to her books, but I don't think the worldview she presents could be called distinctly "Christian". The other slight criticism I have is that I would have liked to see Veith give more discussion to developing a model for how Christians can interact with their culture through literature. He kind of assumes too much here.

For all you science nerds and techies

Dr. Veith, like C.S. Lewis, has the wonderful ability to communicate insights and wisdom to those who are unlike himself. I am a stereotypical engineer with an underdeveloped appreciation of arts and literature. His books however, have motivated me to explore and discover new worlds offered by both. Reading "State of the Arts" led me to acquiring Rembrandt's paintings, "Storm on the Sea of Galilee" and "Raising of the Cross" - both have become my primary source of solace in times of anxiety. I have also purchased a membership to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and eagerly look forward to what I might discover on my visits.

I am only part way through, "Reading between the lines," but clearly recognize the master's touch. I was sitting BAM (Books a Million) with my grandson after finishing the chapter on fiction and began reading Madeleine L'Engles, "Wrinkle in Time." I had to put down the first book to finish the second; I don't think Dr. Veith would have forgiven me if I did not. While L'Engles' book is already biased toward the scientific type, I could now read with a consciousness of how she used the characters, plot, theme and setting to fire the imagination while telling her story.

I don't know what the value of Dr. Veith's books are to those who have already cultivated a taste and knowledge for good art and literature but if you are like me, wanting in those areas, but would like to venture into that other world this is a great place to start!

This Book has the wrong title!!!

The only problem with this book is that it has the wrong title. It shouldn't be called a "Christian" guide to literature, but simply a guide to literature. I heartily recommend this book to both my Christian and non-Christian friends.
Mr. Veith clearly explains the importance of literature in our modern society. His description of the different literary forms gave me a new appreciation for some genres that in the past I had avoided. This book is important to both the avid reader as well as some one who would like to develop an appreciation for literature. It is most appropriate for anyone who has an interest in literature, not just Christians.

Chock Full of Great Insights

I have had the privilege of reading The Acceptance Guidebook in its editing stages before it became available for sale. Todd Schaefer offers a goldmine of insights into the nature of the human mind and how to navigate it through the art of acceptance. Acceptance is necessary if you want to really accomplish your true purpose in life. Todd has a very unique way of guiding the reader through all the necessary and often overlooked steps toward a spiritually fulfilling life. If you like self help books that are full of practical and quotable gems on every page, The Acceptance Guidebook is worth looking at.

A Must Have to self discovery

In my work as a holistic nutritionist specialising in Crohn's Disease, I am always seeking out easy to understand books for my clients new to personal and self development.

Many of the books on the market are written in such a manner that you are supposed to already "know" the concepts and this can become discouraging. This is where The Acceptance Guidebook: Spiritual Solutions for Active Minds comes in. It is a must read, especially if you are new to the concept of self development or looking to deepen your understanding of your true authentic self.

Todd Shaefer has done an excellent job of teaching the principals of self discovery by sharing his own journey's life transformations; creating a powerful connection with the reader. This is not only a must read, but will be hard to put down. There is nothing more powerful than engaging with the author's intimate thoughts as you are slowly transforming within yourself. It is like having a friend along your journey to awareness and acceptance.

When I was on my healing journey from Crohn's disease I wish I had had a book like this; simple, easy to understand, easy to follow and full of real life examples that deepens "aha" moments and creates excitement to wanting to know more.

Todd Schaefer has done an impeccable job of really taking key concepts such as allowing feeling, releasing expectations and having a joyful agenda and making it simple to understand and incorporate into your daily life. "We each have our clay - our wounds, fears, passions and interests. The clay is those malleable parts of us that we use to begin our inner work." It can not get any easy to understand than that. This is a must read for practitioners, healers and anyone wanting to live a more conscious fulfilled and joyous life.

The Acceptance Guidebook

In my work as an energy healer, I am always looking for new material on old truths.
When I was led to Todd Schaefer's book, I knew I found a true gem.
As he states in his book, we find ourselves continually trying to `fix what's wrong,' with us, rather than accept our inborn mastery. Mr. Schaefer's insightful discussions on "the dark night of the soul," gave me renewed hope and provided me with a refreshed approach to enable me to not only conquer my own demons, but to help others in their struggle to find acceptance and forgiveness in an unforgiving world. He suggests to us that we should not try and detach or resist going through negative experiences, but rather shows how the experience is simply a temporary part of being human. If we are able to observe rather than resist, the experience becomes part of our soul's journey and through observation and acceptance of it, we can gain valuable information and wisdom. He teaches us that it is not only important, but actually easier to take this approach in life, rather than cling to old drama.
This, and the many other examples he offers about the art of surrender, make this book well worth the read. I appreciate the opportunity to catch a glimpse of Mr. Schaefer's brilliance and insights into what makes humans tick and highly recommend this book for professional healers, as well as all seekers of truth and peace. Anyone interested in how to finally come to terms with their old, well worn issues and be empowered and equipped for self-responsibility can truly learn how to move forward through the art of acceptance and will definitely find this book a valuable tool in their daily walk.
