what a wonderful resource for the budding egyptologist!

first, allow me to say that i am quite enjoying these puffin classics editions of some of my favorite books!

this book is separated out into three sections: tales of the gods, tales of magic, and tales of adventure. the books begins with a prologue of the land of egypt, then moves right into the following stories:

ra and his children
isis and osiris
horus the avenger
khnemu of the nile
the great queen hatshepsut
the prince and the sphinx
the princess and the demon
the golden lotus
teta the magician
the book of thoth
se-osiris and the sealed letter
the land of the dead
the tale of the two brothers
the story of the shipwrecked sailor
the adventures of sinuhe
the peasant and the workman
the taking of joppa
the story of the greek princess
the treasure thief
the girl with the rose-red slippers

a bonus here with the puffin classics is the addition of backstory included at the end of the book. here you can learn more about the author, the gods, and so much more. what a delightful thing to include!

Good for Young Reader

Overall, I liked this book, but I found the author's attempts to include turn of the century English bias on ancient cultures a bit annoying. My first impression of this book from the description was that the stories were based on ancient Egyptian legends and just "rounded" out (not added to). Unfortunately, the author embellished some ancient legends and also rewrote some English/European fairy tales into Egyptian "myths". Since I probably have more knowledge of Ancient Egyptian history than many readers of this book, I found it to be bothersome.

From a lay-reader's standpoint I found this book a quick, but enjoyable read. Some of the stories were very well written (The Great Queen Hatshepsut, The Book of Thoth, The Land of the Dead), some not-so-much (The Tale of Two Brothers, The Peasant and the Workman, The Taking of Joppa).

For a young reader, these are good stories to get them interested in the subject so they will want to do their own research.

All my Egyptian knlowledge is from "Stargate SG1" & Rick Riordan!

Okay, I will admit that this is one culture that I have ignored until I started watching "Stargate SG1" and recently read Rick Riordan's "The Kane Chronicles," (Red Pyramid, Throne of Fire).

Most people grew up on the Greek & Roman mythology and these Myths are much lesser known. Roger Lancelyn Green is an old school writer, I have read a few of his other Puffin Classics and he is a very easy to read author. I like his versions of myths over all the other authors I have read.

If your a fan Rick Riordan's books (Basically, all the Greek, Roman & Egyptian gods are alive and well in modern times, creating great quests for new Demi-gods & for the latter Magicians), you will really appreciate reading the source of all the great story lines.

It's a good short book, and a great intro to Egyptian Mythology.

Fills in a Small Amount of Background

This little tome does not seem to have ever been intended for wide distribution. It is intended just for fans of the universe conceived by John Scalzi in his books, OLD MAN'S WAR and THE GHOST BRIGADES. It exists merely to fill in a little of the background of the that artistic universe. To that degree, it has some small success but is not really a great entertainment value.

The situation is a PR tour by the protagonist of the first book. He is visiting some colonial worlds and pitching the mission of the military. The entire book, all 30 pages, is a transcript of a public interview he gives on one of the worlds. In it, he is asked some questions and he answers them without any dodging. Some of the questioners are supportive and some are antagonistic. Surprisingly, he seems to share some empathy with the antagonist at some points.

This is worthwhile if you are a great fan or if you want to fill in a small bit of the cultural background of this particular playground. If neither sounds appealing, wait for the next book.

A must for after finishing Old Man's War

As soon as I completed Old Man's War, I went right online to pick up Questions for a Soldier. OMW was such a great read that when it was over I was left wanting more and couldn't wait to learn of what happens to John Perry. QfaS is a very short story- it takes all of 5-10 minutes to read to whole thing. That's right, ten minutes tops. Is it worth the price of admission? Absolutely! If you loved OMW, you can't not get it. As the title suggests, John Perry is the honorary speaker at one of the colonies that he and the CDF defends. There he is asked by townspeople what it is like being a soldier and the talk turns into a deeper discussion about the meaning of the CDF and what it is to be a colonist and a soldier. This really is a fun read and a great, if only minor, expansion to this great universe that Scalzi has created. As far as timelines go, you can read this before or after Ghost Brigades, QfaS is a stand-alone one shot- but worth reading. This is especially worth picking up because John Perry isn't a part of Ghost Brigades; Jane Sagan takes a more forward role in that story. So if you want more of John Perry, buy Questions for a Soldier. Here's hoping the third book reunites John and Jane for an entire story of their own!

This is a signed, limited edition chapbook from Subterranean Press, with cover and interior illustrations by Bob Eggleton.

Captain John Perry, in Old Man's War, did a goodwill tour of the colonies after the Battle of Coral. This is the Q&A session from one of those stops, on the colony world of New Goa. There's no story here, really; just the back-and-forth between a combat veteran and some of the civilians the Colonial Defense Forces are defending-who have a variety of views of the CDF, the fact that it's composed entirely of old folks from Earth (colonists cannot enlist), and the perpetual state of war between humans and most other intelligent species they're in contact with. It's interesting, entertaining, and thoughtful.

Better than first edition

This is the wittiest, funniest, savviest collection of observations on how to be an effective male in the twentieth first century you can find. Don't confuse this vast smorgasbord of essays on everything from wine, dating, music choice, sex, in-laws, kink, and clothes with the kind of pseudo-cool yet actually uptight advice you'd find in GQ or similar post-frat boy rags. Practical and highly amusing at the same time.

Every man should own this book

I reference this book as much as the bible. It has become my second bible. I take it everywhere I go right in my napsack, in my car and whenever boarding a plane. Imagine all of the witty advice columns you've read in Playboy, Maxim, GQ, Mens Health, etc. and you have the MG series in one tidy and handsome package. Read it, soak it in and live like a gentleman. And if nothing else it is an excellent conversation starter.

If you are a man or know a man this book is a must. I originally bought the first edition in high school back in early 2000, and i was impressed so much that i decided to apply a lot of what i learned. this book really helped me out, especially when i was in college trying to balance my social life with work and school. among a few things i learned that i often get kudos for in my adult life that i can credit the book with are basic skills for mixing drinks, hosting gatherings, and grooming standards.

Vincent J. Genovesi, SJ, received his PhD in Christian ethics from Emory University. He is a professor at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. His articles have appeared in such journals as The Thomist, The Way, America, and Review for Religious.

Very Good Overview

This excellent work by Genovesi highlights many of the important concerns in Catholic sexual ethics today. It is a very well-balanced book and offers the reader a wealth of interesting information. It is also easy to read, though long, and stirs up questions about how to be faithful to the Church teachings while being pastoral. I would recommend the book for someone who would like to know more detailed information on the Catholic view of Love and Sexuality and would also urge that reader to look over the various Church documents at the same time (i.e. Humanae Vitae, On the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons, Casti Conubii, and others).

Enlightening discussion of Catholic sexual ethics

This book adequately presents all major issues in sexual ethics and provides an illuminating discussion from the perspective of Catholic moral theology. The author gives room to all positions within the broad array of Catholic moral theologians today. As opposed to the dogmatic view of some manuals still used by seminaries and confessor, the author devotes space and energy to the discussion of moral arguments behind each moral solution. This book is very helpful to any layman or priest that wants to make sense of Catholic moral teaching in sexual matters.

A great resource for adults, both young and old, who are concerned with faith and living morally. Honest and straight forward, Genovesi confronts sexual issues that are sometimes difficult for the average individual to accept. His combination of theological and pyschological teachings deserves appreciation. Genovesi reveals the essentials of Love and sexual morality to those who need it the most, i.e., everyone.

Morality is part of every human life and society. Many scholars hold the assumption that Judaism has no natural law. This is simply wrong. It is interesting that Congress recently recognized the Seven Noahided Laws as the bedrock of society. “These ethical values and principals have been the bedrock of society from the dawn of civilization when they were known as the Seven Noahide Laws…” (H.J Res. 104 - One hundred second Congress - 3/20/1991) Natural Law in Judaism included a discusses the Noahide Laws.

The Torah is particular as well as universal. God revealed six commandments(categories of law) through Adam. After the flood a seventh was added. These commandments to Noah are repeated in Torah. About the Author
Richard A. Dunlap is a professor in the Department of Physics and Atmospheric Science at Dalhousie University and has a cross-appointment in the College of Sustainability. He received a B.S. in Physics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (1974), an A.M. in Physics from Dartmouth College (1976) and a Ph.D. in Physics from Clark University (1981). Since 1981 he has been on the faculty at Dalhousie University. From 2001 to 2006 he was Killam Research Professor of Physics, and since 2009 he has been Director of the Dalhousie University Institute for Research in Materials. He currently is a member of the DREAMS Program (Dalhousie Research in Energy, Advanced Materials and Sustainability). Prof. Dunlap is author of three previous text books Experimental Physics: Modern Methods (Oxford 1988), The Golden Ratio and Fibonacci Numbers (World Scientific 1997) and An Introduction to the Physics of Nuclei and Particles (Brooks/Cole 2004). Over the years his research interests have included critical phenomena, magnetic materials, amorphous materials, quasicrystals, hydrogen storage, and superconductivity. His current research activities are primarily in the area of materials for advanced rechargeable batteries. He has published more than 280 refereed research papers.

A Nice Reference

Although this is labeled an introductory text, it definitely assumes a particular level of knowledge of nuclear chemistry and physiscs. It also sort of jumps around from topic to topic. That being said, it does have all of the necessary basics when talking about nuclear chemistry. There are some handy charts, graphs, and pictures that can be used as a reference as well.
