Riveting Arthurian retelling!

I have searched and searched for a great Arthurian retelling and have been disappointed with the ones I have ventured into reading. I was somewhat skeptical when I picked up Nancy McKenzie's Queen of Camelot. This two-novels-in-one compilation is based on Guenevere, from her point of view, in first person narrative, and is 623 pages long in very small print. I didn't want to waste my time reading something this big only to be disappointed at the end. I nevertheless gave the book a whirl. Glad I did! This is one of the most compelling and beautifully told retells I have ever read! McKenzie gives us a detailed story about Guenevere from her point of view. She tells us about the prophecy on the day she was born, how she spends her childhood as an adventurous tomboy, how people fear her and treat her differently as she grows up, how the knights around her battle with the Saxons, and how all of the prophecies come true. She meets Arthur, marries him and later has a love affair with Lancelot, something based on the original tale. But the novel has so much more than that. You will see how this story of magic, prophecies, love and betrayal transpires in an altered, detailed and beautiful light. There are many twists throughout the novel.

Guenevere is developed in such an abundant, three-dimensional way in this novel. She is no longer just the pagan beauty who marries a Christian, betrays him and destroys all of Camelot as a result. She is a complex character with flaws as well as virtues in this offering. Arthur is also written in a more interesting, compelling way here, but it is Lancelot that once again blows me away. I have always romanticized Sir Lancelot and McKenzie does not disappoint me in her version of the loyal, chivalrous knight. Merlin and Morgan Le Fay are written with much complexity and nuance as well. This novel, however, does not focus so much on the love triangle between Guenevere, Arthur and Lancelot as much as her inability to supply an heir for Arthur and her affection for Arthur's bastard son, the traitorous Mordred. The overall story is magnificent. Once again, I say that McKenzie did a wonderful job bringing Guenevere to life. She turns this character into a strong, intelligent, complex, three-dimensional, flesh and blood woman, someone you will feel a great deal of affinity with. She is not portrayed as a simple-minded, traitorous hussy in this one! I loved the fanciful storytelling style that made me turn the pages until the wee hours of the night. Some of my friends who read the book along with me complained about it being too long-winded. I didn't think it was long-winded at all. In fact, I wish it had been longer. I loved this book and I look forward to giving Grail Prince a whirl.

Keeps you thinking and wondering...

Although it does not correctly correspond to the true tale of King Arthur (so says my boyfriend according to the book "The Once and Future King"), I, too, greatly enjoyed this bittersweet book depicting the great legend of Camelot, King Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, and others. I loved the attention Ms. McKenzie put to the details of everything she wrote about. There were times that I wished the book would go faster but it kept my interest enough to be finished within three days. At the end, I mourned at the characters' fate and I wished that somehow they were real and I could change the way things ended. Nonetheless, it is a truly memorable book, though I don't think I can read the book again because it is too painful to fall in love with the characters and then bear their fate again..

I didnt know what to expect when getting this book but Nancy Mckenzie has written it so smoothly that anyone can read it and understand it. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.... what else can I say. Best book I have read in years!

Transforming knowledge

What powerful and profound content. If you have the courage to be open minded to genuine truth, rather than just being spoon fed from the pew, this book will change your life and give meaning to the gospel like never before. The Lord is both our brother in the flesh forever (fully human) and our eternal life and righteousness by the gift of His own divine Spirit (fully divine). Satan's done his best to hide this truth from us and the whole Christian world. We can know Him who is the Truth or we can be told what to believe by systems of religion, it's up to us individually (free will).

WARNING: The author denies the Trinity!

I cannot recommend this book because Mr. Bivens denied the Trinity. The Trinity is one of the most foundational truths of the Christian faith. This book will not clear up what he called the "propaganda floating around the Church concerning the Trinity." He simply adds additional false teaching to a cultic worldview. Unfortunately, Bruce died in 2013 before being able to correct the errors contained in this book.

Science and sci-fi go hand in hand in this ambitious, if not entirely successful, thriller by Jensen (Millennium Rising), which incorporates elements of Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism) as well as theoretical physics. During WWII, physicist and mystic Rabbi Yosef Kobinski vanished from Auschwitz in a blinding flash of light. Kobinski left behind at the camp his Kabbalist masterpiece, The Book of Torment, to be buried for safekeeping. Half a century later, a Jerusalem rabbi and an American journalist are trying to find it. Kobinski had also discovered a mathematical theorem that accounts for good and evil in the universe. The theorem is astonishingly similar to work that Dr. Jill Talcott and her assistant Nate Andros have been doing at the University of Washington, studying the effects of energy waves on living creatures. Talcott and Andros are not yet aware of the full destructive potential of their experiments, but the government is, and its agents are soon on Talcott's trail as she takes up the search for Kobinski's manuscript. The principals ultimately find themselves gathered at the very site near Auschwitz where Kobinski disappeared, and they too are in for an otherworldly odyssey. Jensen is on surer ground describing Kabbalah and Holocaust history than she is plotting supernatural adventures, which unravel by the end. But she gets points for the innovative, multifaceted story.

Big, bad Calder Farris is a Marine Intelligence operative on the trail of cutting-edge scientific research that can yield new weapons technology. The ambitious young physicist Jill Talcott is secretly testing a revolutionary new theory in wave mechanics. The paths of these people converge in a search for missing pieces of a lost manuscript written at Auschwitz by a Polish rabbi, physicist, and mystic who vanished in front of witnesses 50 years ago. Modern physics and Kabbalah merge in Kobinski's manuscript, and as the four main characters pursue different aspects of the knowledge it contains, their quest delivers them deep into their own private hells. Although this genre-defying tale takes on weighty issues, Jensen's impressive mastery of fictional technique-plotting, humor, sympathetic characters, a great McGuffin, and lots of suspense-makes it feel like much lighter fare. The middle section is a bit hard to get through, but by then most readers will be hooked enough to stick around for the fitting denouement. This interesting story has obvious appeal for SF and suspense fans, but it is also an enjoyable exercise in the arcane for readers intrigued by codes, psychology, and mysticism.

Her predicament constitutes proof, were any needed, that there is indeed a link between good and evil. The book plays out as it has begun, in rather standard thriller fashion. Jensen keeps it moving, though, and her characters, if not always sympathetic, are fully developed. In this, her second novel, she gives lessons in style to many thriller writers with longer publication lists. Frieda Murray

Interesting, but Not Always Thrilling

As I write this review I feel just a little... torn. The truth is it took me about five months to complete the novel, and it was rarely a pageturner for me. But when it was, it really was.
Then there's the whole spiritual cosmology that Jensen offers, which is not only intriguing, but really makes sense. I know nothing of Kaballah (nor claim to, even after reading this book) but the tenets put forth that Jensen claims are Kaballah are extremely interesting. More than once I've brought it up in conversations with people, and they always agree that it makes a great deal of sense. Jensen provides a few charts describing this philosophy in the beginning of the book, and I referred back to it often during the novel.
My favorite character is Aharon Handalman, a Jewish rabbi who is fanatically devout to the point of coldness, but eventually finds a sense of freedom and love.
But the truth is he and maybe Denton Wyle are probably the only characters I didn't find at least a little hollow. As interesting as the premise for this book may be, there was just something missing, some element that would make the book seem more real.
"Dante's Equation" is a good read with a good premise, but not so good character development. It is still very recommendable.

Never been much of a reader but...

I couldn't wait to get to the next page. I felt I understood each character and their motives so well. Going into such depth with each character gave me a sense of compassion for all of them. I don't think a book has ever made me feel compassion for every character.

The beginning of the book did not hook me as much as it did towards the middle when things started coming together.

It is so exciting just writing a review about the book it makes me want to read it again. It blows away the Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons. to me those books seem like Hollywood fluff compared to this book. Although I think if I hadn't read Dantes Equation first I might not have expected so much more.

I love this kind of book

I just love stories that combine history with fantasy, weaving the impossible into a sense that maybe, just maybe.... Well, it is wonderful. Perfect examples are books like Tim Powers "stress of her regard," that actually makes the poetry of romanticism (Keats, Shelly, Byron, Coleridge) work as poetry about real vampiric mythic creatures in love with the poets. Also, Lisa Goldstein's marvelous stories like "Dark Cities Underground." These are good fantasies. And now, at last, another author. This is a marvelous story that combines physics, weapons of mass destruction, kabbalah, and karmic destiny. Read this if you enjoy those kinds of books.

WONDERFUL!

Absolutely love "Experience Your Perfect Soul", it far exceeded my expectations. The purpose of the book does seem to actually experience your perfect soul. The first few chapters contained the best written description of the I AM I have read. Then the last few chapters lifted me with Love.

I've found new great authors from this book, and have ordered the complete text from Eva Bell Werber and Ruby Nelson I enjoyed them so much. What especially impressed me is that somehow the chapters were edited so that it didn't seem like quotes but rather reading text, and even though each chapter was from a different author it actually read as a coherent book from chapter to chapter. Its beautiful to read out loud and its the kind of work you can read over and over. You won't be disappointed.

Thy Mighty Creative Power Shines From Each Word, Each Sentence, Each Page

Experiencing Your Perfect Soul is like being spiritually rocked in mother's arms, nestled close to her fiery breasts of love -- safe, warm, and exquisitely healed by each tender, perfect glance. What a gift! What a lavish dispensing of the very sweetest divine inspiration! There isn't a sentence in this wonderful book which doesn't lovingly obliterate ignorance. Do we need such Divine Love as enlightening aspirants? Yes, yes, yes! Do we deserve it? Who can say? Joseph Rogers was a medical officer at two different workhouses in Victorian London. At both workhouses, he encountered conditions which appalled him. In his autobiography, Joseph Rogers left a vivid description of conditions inside the workhouse. SICKNESS AND CRUELTY IN THE WORKHOUSE is an edited version of his autobiography, and will appeal to anybody who is interested in a first hand account of life in a Victorian workhouse, and in the treatment of the poor in Victorian London.

“ ... all my nurses were pauper inmates. The responsible duties they had to perform were remunerated by an amended dietary and a pint of beer. Occasionally for laying out the dead, and for other specially repulsive duties, they had a glass of gin. This was given by the master or matron, but I was expected to sanction the supply.”

“ ... the ward used for foul cases ...was in immediate proximity to the tinker's shop. Like visiting the workhouse of Oliver Twist

This book was a very vivid depiction of the conditions within the Brittish workhouses, and the people that lived and worked in them.
This book was written as a first hand account, by the Doctor that treated the inmates, and eventually helped to improve the basic care for the poor, this book has examples of the best and worst of life during these times.
It was worth reading, although some may find it dull.

Many books have been written about the openings in chess. Unfortunately,
most of them are meant for advanced players who are able to memorize
hundreds of complicated variations.

Now however, J.E.F. Kaan, a Dutch scientist, has produced a 'repertoire
book', suitable for beginners and aspiring club players. The lines are
relatively easy to remember, and make sure the reader can face the
opening with confidence.

A big advantage of the openings given in the book, is that they will rermain
playable for a long time. They have been analyzed in depth and checked
by computer analysis. This makes the book a timeless rerference guide.
Many diagrams contribute to the learning process of the reader.

Highly recommended.

It is a pleasant surprise to discover how comprehensively easy it is to read this book in plain simple English

J.E.F Kaan is a Masters degree physicist and MBA and lives in the Netherlands. He obviously has a very logical and mathematical brain. Thus it is a pleasant surprise to discover how comprehensively easy it is to read this book in plain simple English. It is geared towards beginners and those at intermediate (club) level looking to strengthen their game. There is a taster of advanced strategy, all laid out in an easy to follow format.

This wonderful book deserves to have a wider audience and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I would recommend reading it in small chunks at a time, as you need to concentrate to follow the moves and the logic, and this takes pleasurable effort, despite the clean simplicity of the text.

I have played chess for many years, although only for leisure. I have never read a chess book before. My knowledge of chess comes from playing the game with all levels of opponent, some of whom were trained to a high level and knew the advice of having a strong opening move and the importance of controlling the centre of the board. My two uncles, sadly now deceased, were both chess masters, winning many chess trophies and tournaments in Finland and for Finland, together with a clock, and often playing in the communist block where chess is strong, and I soon noticed they would always make the same opening move, with an occasional “crazy” move as a surprise tactic.

Kaan has certainly encouraged me to resume the beautiful game and he recommends using a computer chess program to practice the recommended moves.

Chess is a spatial game and it helps to have good spatial intelligence. Kaan nonetheless helps the reader with a three-dimensional chess board early on in the book to aid the reader’s visualisation of the chess board and the square letters and numbers. When dealing with the Black defence in the early chapters, he helpfully turns the diagrams upside down so it is from the perspective of the reader.

The diagrams of all the moves and the artistic graphics used as illustrations between the chapters are excellent and artistically pleasing. There are black and white photos of various grandmasters, all of which are aspirational. The colour version shows the chessboard in a pleasing brown and yellow rather than stark black and white.

Chapter One deals with the purpose of the book. Chapter Two the Opening Phase and why a good opening is essential to winning a game.

Chapter Three is aimed at Beginners’ Openings, which can be skipped by those who want to go straight to intermediate.

The introductions over, and familiarity with chess notation absorbed, Chapter Three continues with a complete tool kit of Opening Repertoires. Kaan explains why this is important and demonstrates what can go wrong by illustrating typical Patzer (=beginner) moves that lead to disaster by their rashness. Included in this are the Grob, or the Scholar’s Mate. All terms are explained. Kaan takes us through the (for example) Black Italian opening, or the Blackburne Shilling gambit, to name just a few.

Kaan leads us through openings to avoid (as a relative beginner) such as the Giuoco Piano – white moving the bishop to C4, actually a start for sharp attack for the more skilled – the Scotch, the Panziani, Viena King’s Gambit, Bishop’s Opening, Centre Games, Alapins, Two Knights, etc, etc. He runs through opening defense moves for Black, explaining the possible pitfalls

Chapter Four deals with the Intermediate Repertoire, for example, the Deferred Schliemann, or the Modern Steinitz Defence. This leads on to the key Ruy Lopez variations, to name but one.

Chapter Five progresses into Gambit Repertoire. These tactical plans include Gosing, Scotch , Sicilian, Gruenfeld and King’s Indian, amongst several others.

Chapter Six deals with Positional Repertoire: – strategy. Amongst these are the Dutch, Austrian and Leningrad attacks.

Then follows an Appendix of 34 pages that provides some notes, a glossary of terms, an Index of Variations in tabular form and comprehensive index of the contents of the book.

Sound comprehensive repertoire for the beginner through intermediate player

Provides a complete opening repertoire, for both White and Black, targeted to the beginner-intermediate player. For White, repertoires based on 1.e4 (featuring the Ruy Lopez) and also on 1.d4 are offered (you have a choice!). For Black, against 1.e4 the repertoire recommends 1...e5 for beginners and 1...e6 (French Defense) for intermediate players. For Black against 1.d4, 1...Nf6 (Queen's Gambit and Indian Defenses) is featured, with recommendations for lines against 1.c4 and 1.Nf3 as well. Also included is a gambit repertoire for White beginning with 1.e4, for those who are interested in gambit play as White. Overall, a comprehensive and sound opening repertoire is provided. All recommended lines have been checked by strong computer chess engines. The Kindle version of this book has the title "Learning The Chess Openings" by the same author.

About the Author
Kristin Kirkpatrick, MS, RD, LD, is the manager of Wellness Nutrition Services at the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute in Cleveland, Ohio, where she oversees nutrition-related services at the Center for Lifestyle Medicine. She is an award-winning dietitian (who in 2012 was named Dietetic Educator of the Year by the Ohio Dietetic Association) and a regular guest on local and national television shows, including The Dr. Oz Show, NBC Nightly News, and the TODAY Show, as well as NPR Radio. She received her B.A. from George Washington University, her master's degree (in health promotion management) from American University, and her dietetics training from the University of Akron.
Ibrahim Hanouneh, MD, completed his internal medicine residency and gastroenterology/hepatology fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic. He was chosen by the gastroenterology faculty to serve as Chief Fellow for his third year training at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Hanouneh currently works with Minnesota Gastroenterology, a Twin Cities-based gastroenterology practice (the largest gastroenterology practice in the nation), specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of adult and pediatric digestive system and liver disorders. He continues to serve as an assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Hanouneh has presented at several national and international meetings and has been an author on over fifty papers as well as numerous abstracts.

I am getting goats in the spring and I had a lot of questions. Nigerian Dwarf Goats not only answered many of my questions, but it taught me things I didn't realize I didn't know. Usually I read ebooks and then delete them to free up space, but this book is going to stay in my library because I'm sure I will be referring to it often.

Everything You Need to Know About Nigerian Goats and Didn't Even Realize You Should Ask!

WOW - What a fantastic book. I'm in the process of planning a new homestead and I'm getting goats. I'd been on the fence regarding breed, so I wanted to learn more breed-specific information than the general "raising goats" information. This book completely delivered!

Not only did I confirm that this will be the best breed for my homestead, but I also learned about the particular quirks of the breed so that I can prepare for them before I make the investment. (I've completely rethought my original plan for housing them due to the information in this guide - thanks for saving me that money! ) City dwellers will be pleased to learn that this breed will work well in their locations, given a few points of preparation that are thoroughly explained in the guide.

The author is extremely knowledgeable, and while the book is in depth, it's easy to understand and enjoyable to read.

Goats can be a wonderful addition to your homestead, but you need to do your research to choose the right breed and to set up your property for the best possible relationship with your new caprine buddies. :) I strongly recommend this book to anyone thinking of starting a herd.

It touches on a lot of questions a new or soon to be goat owner should be asking. Items that I found particularly helpful include, a definition of terms section, why use goats for milk, advantages of goat milk, investment costs and ongoing costs. The issue of space would be needed is also discussed. The best reason to buy this overview is the great advice you will get before you go to purchase the first goats. This guide will help you start strong with good stock. Lesa Wilke is a long time, award winning Nigerian Dwarf goat breeder, respected in the field. Reading this book will give you the answers you need to get started raising milking goats, and particularly the Nigerian Dwarf breed.
